The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is warning Michigan providers about medetomidine, a new drug identified in overdose deaths.
Michigan has now seen three deaths involving medetomidine. Medetomidine is a veterinary tranquilizer, similar to xylazine, that can cause adverse effects including slowed heart rate. It is not approved for use in people.
Medetomidine is not reversed by medications such as naloxone, but is often found in combination with opioids, which can be reversed by naloxone. As with xylazine, give rescue breaths in case of respiratory depression. Unlike xylazine, testing strips are not yet available to detect medetomidine.
Providers can find more detailed guidance in the attached document from the Michigan Poison & Drug Information Center. June is National Safety Month! 🦺 Prioritize safety at home, work, and everywhere in between to keep our communities healthy and secure. National Safety Month aims to reduce the leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities. The National Safety Council (NSC) spearheads this observance, providing resources and guidelines to help prevent accidents and injuries.
Here are some key focus areas:
Workplace Safety:
- Training and Awareness: Implementing safety training programs to educate employees about potential hazards.
- Ergonomics: Ensuring workstations are ergonomically designed to prevent strain and injury.
- Protective Equipment: Promoting the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like helmets, gloves, and safety goggles.
Home Safety:
- Fall Prevention: Using non-slip mats, installing handrails, and ensuring adequate lighting to prevent falls, especially for the elderly.
- Fire Safety: Installing smoke detectors, having fire extinguishers on hand, and practicing evacuation plans.
- Childproofing: Keeping hazardous materials out of reach and securing furniture to prevent tipping.
Road Safety:
- Defensive Driving: Encouraging drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions, and adhere to speed limits.
- Seat Belt Use: Promoting the consistent use of seat belts for all passengers.
- Alcohol and Drug Awareness: Highlighting the dangers of driving under the influence and promoting sober driving.
Throughout June, organizations and individuals are encouraged to share safety tips, conduct training sessions, and promote awareness activities to help create safer environments for everyone. Let's work together to make safety a priority in every aspect of our lives!
For more information and resources, visit the National Safety Council's website at www.nsc.org.

At M & M Home Care we are committed to helping break the stigma against mental health conditions. Our therapists evaluate psychosocial areas and have open dialogues with our clients regarding their mental wellness.
It’s not uncommon for client’s who have sustained injuries to report mental health concerns. This especially common when there is a high traumatic accident, chronic pain, a loss of function which impacts their independence or a need for caregiving in typically very personal or private tasks such as toilet hygiene. We create space for these conversations and provide referrals when necessary.

The Dark Side of the Gig Economy
As the President of M & M Home Care (and other ventures) I can't help but be deeply concerned about the growing allure of the gig economy and the impact it has on not only our workforce but also the workforce in general. I see a concerning trend that is on the rise and significantly impacting employers' ability to attract and retain entry-level staff. This revolving door scenario sees individuals entering the realm of traditional employment, only to swiftly transition to gig work and back again, leaving employers struggling with a continuous cycle of turnover that poses challenges for maintaining a reliable workforce.
The journey begins as entry-level employees seek the stability and structure promised by traditional jobs. However, the appeal of a steady paycheck and set schedules often fades as these individuals find themselves drawn to the allure of the gig economy's flexibility. Platforms like DoorDash, Uber, Lyft, and GrubHub offer instant cash opportunities and flexible schedules tempting entry-level workers away from the constraints of a more traditional work environment.
Faced with the inevitable financial uncertainties of gig work, employees often return to the perceived safety of traditional employment. However, the rigid structures, scheduled work hours, hierarchies, and corporate dynamics prove to be a source of frustration, reigniting the cycle of turnover.
I believe that the gig economy attracts those who prioritize immediate gratification over long-term stability. This transient workforce, entangled in the gig-to-traditional employment cycle, display a concerning lack of commitment to any one job or industry. The revolving door scenario not only disrupts the continuity of our services but also paints a bleak picture of a workforce more interested in chasing short-term gains than investing in meaningful, sustainable employment. The absence of loyalty within this workforce has detrimental effects on businesses, leading to increased recruitment costs and a compromised quality of service delivery.
Given the negative impact of the gig economy on the mindset and commitment of its workforce, there arises a critical question: should businesses risk hiring individuals from this sector? And if we do take the chance, should we even be surprised when they abruptly leave? The allure of immediate financial rewards often masks the harsh reality of unstable pay and a lack of essential benefits, leading to a workforce that may not be aligned with the values of businesses seeking stability and commitment.
While there may be talent within the gig economy, it becomes imperative for employers to scrutinize whether the benefits of hiring from this pool outweigh the potential drawbacks. Businesses must weigh the immediate skills and availability of gig workers against the long-term commitment and stability required for roles, especially in industries like home care where consistency and reliability are paramount.
Sadly, I am left grappling with the repercussions of a workforce that values instant gratification over the commitment essential for providing consistent and reliable care to our clients. The gig economy's negative impact on the mindset of our staff calls for a critical examination of its allure, prompting businesses, large and small, to rethink how we attract and retain talent in an environment increasingly characterized by transience and disloyalty.
