Is massage safe for people with cancer?
Light, relaxing massage can safely be given to people at all stages of cancer and each Therapist must be
aware of the person’s full medical history and relevant contraindications.

Tumour or treatment sites should not be massaged to avoid discomfort or pressure on the affected area and underlying organs.

Some people worry that massage can spread cancer cells throughout the body via the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, organs and nodes through which lymphatic fluid (lymph) flows and forms part of the body’s immune system. Lymphatic circulation occurs naturally as we move.

However, the circulation of lymph – from massage or other movement – does not cause cancer to spread. Researchers have shown that cancer develops and spreads because of changes to a cell’s DNA (genetic mutations) and other processes in the body.
Complementary therapies and cancer
Complementary therapies are widely used in USA, Australia, Europe and many people living with cancer use them during treatment for cancer. Massage is a complementary therapy commonly used to provide relaxation and relief from some symptoms of cancer.

Massage is regularly offered as part of cancer care in cancer support centres, hospices, day hospitals, multi-disciplinary practices, community health services and some GP surgeries.

What are the benefits of massage?
*Scientific studies have looked at the effects of various body-based practices on people having cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and surgery. These studies have shown that massage can:
o decrease nausea and depression;
o improve energy, physical symptoms and wellbeing; o reduce anxiety, pain and fatigue.

Some people with cancer say that having a massage also:
o helps them to relax;
o makes them feel whole again;
o helps them share feelings in an informal setting;
o makes them feel more positive about their body; and o rebuilds hope

Using all of this information can help you get the exact relief you need from any side effects you’re experiencing from chemotherapy. Take control of your symptoms and let massage therapy be one of the tools you utilize.

Recovery from Injury
Once someone has sustained an injury, massage is helpful during the recovery period and beyond.

Areas that have required stitches, once fully healed, benefit from massage to assist in preventing scar tissue and releasing adhesions.

An adhesion is irregular fibrous tissue that results from an inflammatory process that starts during the healing of separated tissue, as in surgery or an injury. Adhesions can limit muscle movement by not allowing the fascia or connective tissue to respond to demands.

Massage stimulates the fascial system, allowing the blood to flow effectively to all areas of the body, especially areas of injury. This nourishment helps the healing process, promoting skin and muscle health. The muscles become firmer and the skin becomes more supple with the application of massage. Just think, our massage can help soft tissue system to function at its best!

The human body is a fabulous, self-contained unit that functions in a state of perfect balance . . . most of the time.

The various structures that make up the body communicate in a number of ways to keep their functions operating properly.

The different structural levels ultimately group together into body systems that work together cooperatively; one system cannot operate without the combined efforts of every other system in the body.

Massage Therapy and Stress Relief
While the practice of therapeutic massage has been used for centuries in the east, it is a relatively recent phenomenon here in the west. While the wonders of modern medicine have left many awestruck, more and more people are looking towards complimentary therapies and non-invasive treatments for their ailments. Massage therapy has never been as popular as it is today in America.

A number of studies have shown that massage therapy is a highly effective stress reduction technique. An earlier study, conducted by the University of Miami Medical School and published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry, suggested that children receiving 30 minutes of therapeutic massage daily were less depressed and anxious than they were at the time of their admittance.

This particular study also observed marked differences in the health and behavior of the children in the test group, over the children in the control group. The nurses taking part in the study also noted that the children were more cooperative, and were able to achieve a higher level of sleep quality. On the biological level, the children in the control group exhibited lower levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) in their saliva and in their urine. It quickly became evident to researchers that massage can play a significant role in stress reduction.

It is highly encouraging that both the medical establishment and the general public are starting to realize the impact that stress can have on an individual's health and well being. Some physicians and researchers have suggested that stress is responsible for over 75% of all disease in the western world, including skin disorders, high blood pressure, headaches, digestive ailments, muscle pain, and depression. By employing the age-old techniques of massage therapy, there exists the distinct possibility of overcoming these terrible afflictions.

The eminent Victorian physician, Dr. Stretch Dowse, said: "The mind, which before massage is in a perturbed, restless, vacillating and, even despondent state, becomes after massage, calm, quiet, peaceful and subdued; in fact, the wearied and worried mind has been converted into a mind restful, placid, and refreshed." While modern medicine is full of promise in certain areas, it is not wise to ignore the knowledge and insights of the past. Massage therapy has helped countless people cope with the stress of modern life. It could help you, too.

When most of us think about saunas, one of two things comes to mind: people sweating in a steam-filled room or in a wood-paneled, very hot room. Indeed, traditional saunas are typically extremely hot, with some maintaining dry heat and others dousing the heat source with water, creating steam. In contrast, infrared saunas heat the body without heating the surrounding air. The heaters in infrared saunas emit long, infrared wavelengths that deeply pe*****te the skin. Essentially, an infrared sauna conveys all of the benefits of the sun without the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays. More importantly, the heat of a far infrared sauna has a body pe*******on of up to 1-3/4 inches, whereas traditional saunas only pe*****te about 1/8 inch of the body. This can result in a number of potential health benefits, five of which are outlined here.

1. Weight Loss - When it's hot, your body works hard to maintain its core temperature by sweating. In other words, you lose weight when you sweat. In an infrared sauna, you can burn up to 600 calories in one 30-minute session.

2. Detoxification - Through the air we breathe, the environment in which we live, and the foods we eat, our bodies accumulate and store a lot of chemicals and toxins. Because infrared saunas have such deep pe*******on, they can help detoxify the body - both at the cellular level and through the skin. This kind of detox helps eliminate such toxins as mercury, lead, alcohol, ni****ne, sodium, and cholesterol.

3. Cardiovascular Health - Partaking in an infrared sauna causes your peripheral blood vessels to dilate, which in turn makes your heart work harder. This "workout effect" can help lower blood pressure and increase blood flow.

4. Pain Relief - Because a far infrared sauna pe*****tes so deeply into the body, it can make a real difference when it comes to pain relief. Those suffering from arthritis, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms and other chronic pain conditions often find that pain is alleviated by regular infrared sauna sessions.

5. Anti-Aging - While our skin is our largest organ, it can also be our biggest enemy when it comes to aging. Years of sun damage, along with an accumulation of dirt and toxins, can make us look old before our time. The deep heat of infrared saunas induces sweating, which is a natural way to cleanse the skin, and helps blood flow, which brings nutrients to the skin. In addition, far infrared saunas restore the elasticity of ligaments and tissues - including skin tissue - which helps to make us feel and look younger.

Ring us and book in for your infrared sauna, sit back, relax, and enjoy its health and relaxation benefits.

Getting a massage therapy session is a wonderful experience. But, have you ever wanted to go for a massage therapy session and didnít know what type of massage to get? Massage therapy uses numerous techniques that range from full-body stress relief to highly targeted methods that relieve a wide range of muscular pains and dysfunction. Five types of massage that rank among the most popular types of massage are Chair massage, Medical Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, and Aromatherapy Massage.

1. Chair Massage - also known as Seated massage, is performed while the client remains fully clothed and seated in a specially designed massage chair. The massage chair allows the Massage Therapist to massage the client's head, neck, back, and arms in a typical 10-15 minute session using a variety of kneading, percussion, friction and movement techniques. The high portability of the massage chair and the fact that clients are fully clothed means that massage sessions can be completed nearly anywhere. Chair massage makes a great gift for employees or special clients. Receiving chair massage in the office has been shown to reduce stress and increase employee productivity. Chair massage is also a popular attraction at charity events, trade shows and conventions.

2. Medical Massage - during Medical Massage the Massage Therapist treats specific muscular and connective tissue problems with techniques directed at achieving favorable client outcomes under the supervision and written orders of the client's physician. More simply stated, the Medical Massage Therapist is a massage therapist with advanced training in the assessment of soft tissue dysfunction and treatment that works with your doctor to relieve your pain, improve function and Range of Motion of joints, and improve posture as needed. Medical massage is usually a short session thatís targeted to one or a few areas.

3. Pregnancy Massage - has gained tremendous popularity by helping the mother-to-be remain comfortable during her pregnancy and in many cases have an easier delivery. Pregnancy massage relieves muscle spasms and cramps associated with the stress of extra weight bearing and physical changes that occur during pregnancy.

4. Trigger Point Therapy - directly targets trigger points and the muscles in which they're found. In Trigger Point Therapy the Massage Therapist carefully seeks out the trigger points in a muscle with their fingers, knuckles, or elbows and uses specific compression techniques, friction strokes, and stretches which make the trigger points release and seemingly melt away. The release of the trigger point usually results in a rapid decrease or complete elimination of muscular pain. Trigger Point Therapy is a versatile technique and is often used to treat back pain, Jaw (TMJ) pain, headaches and migraines, whiplash, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, hip pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more.

5. Aromatherapy Massage - is a very relaxing and therapeutic massage incorporating the healthy benefits of massage and the powerful effects of essential oils for an incredible effect youíre going to love. Depending on your needs the Massage Therapist will adjust the massage and the varieties of essential oils for the desired effect.

All of the massage techniques described here can help you receive the health benefits of massage. Of course there are many more massage therapy techniques available that are relaxing, stress reducing, and that relieve chronic tension and pain. You actually don't have to know what type of massage to ask for, you just need to know what you want to achieve. Do you just want to relax? Reduce muscle soreness? Relieve pain? Improve posture? Ask our massage therapist what they recommend for your particular health needs and get massaged today.
