Shabron and his family recently suffered the great loss of his beloved grandmother Parzettie J Gray. Please join me in helping to carry a bit of their burden by donating in any way you can. All choreographers - join us for our SOCal Dance and Choreography Festival 2021.
We are happy to announce that we will be presenting our SoCal Dance & Choreography Festival once again this year. Please find the details below and let me know if you are interested in participating contact 562-397-2137 for application.
We start making decisions on which works to perform over the Fourth of July weekend. Please feel free to submit a past work or a works-in-progress.
No application fee
We understand that money is tight at the moment; therefore, we are not requiring an application fee. However, once selected, we are asking for all participants to purchase a minimum of two tickets each. Ticket money will be collected once a piece is selected.
A word about the # of dancers in each group
It is understandable that people may select solos or duets as we are coming out of our social-distancing time; however, a show with all solos and duets will not be very interesting. Therefore, we encourage choreographers to dig a little deeper and submit a work with three or more dancers. On the other hand, please note that the size of the stage is limited and that more than 7 dancers at one time on the stage, will make it look crowded.

In lieu of live performances this December, SCDT is hosting a video viewing of The Nutcracker. As Saturday, December 12th at 7:00pm would have been our Opening Night, we will be showing our 2019 Nutcracker performance on YouTube so we can all watch last year's show as a dance community in the safety of our homes with a cozy cup of hot cocoa and goodies. Of course the link is available anytime, so you may watch at your convenience. We hope it will keep your spirits bright this holiday season!
This event will be held in conjunction with an SCDT Fundraiser to help cover costs already invested this year. Every tax-deductible donation will come with a uniquely handcrafted and festive free gift!

Please meet Steven Ruvalcaba
This is Steven’s third year and third Nutcracker with SCDA! Steven graduated this year with a BFA in Musical Theatre from CSUF.
I had failed all my dance juries for my musical theatre program my first year in college, which put me at risk of being dropped. In the summer of 2018, I found the studio and nervously asked if i could start attending classes to improve my technique. I was welcomed with open arms and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to study ballet than with Paula. She is a STAR and I would not be the performer I am today without her! I have performed in the summer intensives, including “Paquita”, “La Bayadere”, and “Don Quixote” and performed in Russian, Chinese, Spanish, and the Nutcracker Prince in The Nutcracker. Outside of dancing, my other passions include singing and acting. My dream is to be a professional actor on the screen and on the stage. My goal in life is to be a good person and to live my truth.

Please meet Gina Masis
I’m seven years old. I live in Long Beach with my daddy’s family, who consists of Grandma, Grandpa, and my Uncle, who love me so much. Ever since I can remember, I have always been with them; this also includes my auntie, my great-grandmother, and now my two small cousins. I love spending time with my family, we have so much fun together and they are always there for me. I am in 2nd Grade. I get good grades, and I just received the perfect attendance certificate award from my school. I am enrolled in my 2nd-year Gymnastics class, 1st year swimming lessons level 3 at the Lakewood YMCA, and Ballet lessons at the Southern California Dance Theater. Though this is my first year in ballet, I love it very much. I have always played sports, such as baseball and soccer. I have fallen more in love with ballet that I see myself dancing until I become a teenager. I believe that “Beauty is being the best positive and kind possible version of yourself on the inside and out.”

Please meet Maureen Chen
Graduated from California State University, LA with BS in Computer Science, I am co-founder of 3 companies .
My life has dramatically transformed since 2003. At the time, I wanted to loss weight and wondered if I could start taking ballet classes for the first time as an adult. Paula Vreulink, Founder and Artistic Director of the Southern California Dance Academy gave me the encouragement to start dancing, helping me to believe that it could be more than just a workout.
I've been lucky to dance some of the most famous full-length classical ballet performances including Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, The Nutcracker, Coppélia, La Boutique Fantasque, Choreography Festival and Virtual Alice in Wonderland 2020 and caught life time opportunity to selected as one of six dancers from the Southern California Dance Theatre (SCDT) to perform with the American Ballet Theatre's The Sleeping Beauty at the Segerstrom Center of the Arts in Costa Mesa.
Ballet has changed my life. It has released my workload and improved my health, strength and balanced of my daily life. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the SCDA and SCDT . I'd like to offer a special thanks to Ms. Paula Vreulink for her continuous support and generosity, a touched thanks to my Auntie and life time mentor , Cecelia for her guidance as adult dancer , and thank for my husband, Jack and daughter Amy as continuously family support that I could concentrate on dance class and performance.
It's true what they say, “We don’t meet people by accident, they are meant to cross our paths for a reason."

Please meet Abigail Haun
Abigail has enjoyed performing and dancing practically all her life. She began her ballet training at the age of three; but, once she began training at the Southern California Dance Academy as a fourteen-year-old, she really began to love the art of working towards perfection. At SDCA, she has performed in many roles, including fairies in Sleeping Beauty, Swanhilda’s friend in Coppélia, and the Dew Drop Fairy in previous Nutcrackers. Starting out as a little Chinese dancer, to now performing a principle role is a little girl’s dream come true. She has learned that hard work will always pay off, even if the journey is not as linear as one might have hoped it would be. From the bejeweled crown atop her head, to the satin-looking pointe shoes on her feet, she is radiating with pride and gratefulness to be dancing the role of Snow Queen.
Besides ballet, Abigail spends a lot of her time as a student within the honors program at California State University of Long Beach. She is planning on majoring in Political Science, with a minor in Child Development and Family Studies, to pursue a career as a child advocacy lawyer. Ballet, especially the Nutcracker, will always hold a special place in her heart, and she cannot wait to share the joy of dance with all of you.

Please meet Caitlyn Cappadona
When Caitlyn Cappadona was five years old, she decided she would rather be onstage than in the audience, and she has not stopped performing since. Caitlyn is an experienced actress and dancer who has performed all over California through the Miss America Organization. This is Caitlyn’s second performance with the Southern California Dance Theatre, having previously performed in Virtual Alice in Wonderland in the summer of 2020. Caitlyn’s love of theatre has led her to such roles as Crow in Saint Joseph High School’s production of Crow and Weasel and Hadia in the Long Beach Playhouse’s production of Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.
Caitlyn also served as Miss America’s Miss Ventura County in 2016, which led her to perform a self-written monologue at the Miss California 2016 competition. Caitlyn’s love of ballet began in the fall of 2008 and she has danced all over Los Angeles and Ventura Counties since. She is happy to have returned to dance after a brief hiatus during graduate school, having completed her Master of Arts in Teaching at USC in May 2020.
