oh ya, I guess I should be posting here too! I am so bad at social media as a business owner sometimes. Like, for instance, this isn't even my business page. THAT page is Hugsandshoves. Why did I even do this to myself in the first place!

Moving Past Bad Blood, Ladies of the Long Beach Derby Scene Unite in the Name of Skates 06/03/2014

I would like to address Danielle Carson's article printed May 29 entitled Moving Past Bad Blood, the Long Beach Derby Scene Unite in the Name of Skates. I have been playing roller derby for 8 years and was a Long Beach Roller Derby skater myself. To speculate on the fall of Roller Derby in Long Beach- an organization that consisted of hundreds of people- by interviewing two individuals, is equivalent to reporting on gossip and reduces local derby to a bunch of disorganized, catty girls. It should be noted that the only two skaters quoted in Carson's article work for local rollerskate retail stores. The article should be retitled "Ladies of the Long Beach Derby Scene Unite in the Name of SELLING Skates". The article touts Pigeon, the owner of Moxi rollerskate shop, as a local heroine for bringing derby back to our area, when Pigeon already had an opportunity to absorb the Long Beach Derby Gals in 2012 and turned it down to continue growing her league in the South Bay. It is only now that she bought Moxi skate shop on 4th street that she has a vested interest in bringing roller derby back to Long Beach.

Furthermore, contrary to the article's claim, playing roller derby in Long Beach IS pretty typical of all leagues in the area in that skaters do not get paid to skate and it's largely a labor of love. Pigeon claims that "derby crushes the inequality of the extreme sport lifestyle" while arguing that derby should remain non-profit and skaters should pay to skate. Pigeon asks, "Why pay someone to do marketing if you have someone [on your board] that does marketing for a living?". For a community that so frequently touts feminism, there is nothing empowering or innovative about forming another non-profit recreational roller derby team in Long Beach. I agree that the City is perfect for roller derby and it is undisputed that skaters and fans alike miss the heyday of derby in the dome. However Carson's coverage of the local derby scene was filled with holes and wrought with loaded language. From phrases like, "the fall of the monarchical league" and "the league sprung from the rubble while passions were high" to using the words "Bad Blood" in the title of the article, all were divisive tools that did not unite but were in fact meant to incite and divide. I love Roller Derby and I love Long Beach and there are hundreds of others in this city who feel the same way. I just wish more research had been done to illustrate a broader depiction of the truth, which would have been easily remedied by simply covering a wider variety of opinions. Anything less does a disservice to ALL the hardworking women and men in this community who love the sport of Roller Derby. Thank you for your consideration,

Moving Past Bad Blood, Ladies of the Long Beach Derby Scene Unite in the Name of Skates Shayna “Pigeon” Meikle glided out from behind the counter of Fourth Street’s Moxi Skate Shop on roller skates. To stop at the cross walk, she makes a sharp 180-degree turn by whipping her body around, then proceeds to talk about roller derby.
