If a tsunami strikes, there may not be enough time for an official warning, so it is important to understand natural warnings. If you are at the coast and feel a strong or long earthquake, see a sudden rise or fall of the ocean, or hear a loud roar from the ocean, a tsunami may follow. Move quickly to high ground or inland, away from the water.

Older adults and their caregivers can increase their resilience by taking control in 1, 2, 3:

Step 3: Engage Your Support Network
Reaching out to family, friends and neighbors can help you build a support network that can support you before, during and after a disaster or emergency. Share each aspect of your emergency plan with everyone in your group, including a friend or relative in another area who would not be impacted by the same emergency who can help if necessary. Make sure everyone knows how you plan to evacuate your home or workplace and where you will go in case of a disaster. Make sure that someone in your personal support network has an extra key to your home and knows where you keep your emergency supplies. Practice your plan with those who have agreed to be part of your personal support network.

With rising summer temperatures, some exceeding high heat index, City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis reminds residents to take precautions against the heat. The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.

All City Parks, Recreation and Marine Community Centers and Long Beach Public Library locations are available as designated cooling centers during their normal business hours. For more information, visit longbeach.gov/CoolingCenters.

People are encouraged to check on friends, family and neighbors who are home-bound to make sure they are not affected by the heat.

Older adults, those with chronic illnesses, infants and young children are at greater risk for heat-related illnesses. However, anyone can suffer heat illness and should take precautions to reduce the risk of heat-related illness and injury.

We are finishing up with some tips on pet first aid. Just like humans, animals are prone to the same health and injury hazards as a human, especially in a disaster or emergency situation. If your pet regularly takes medication, talk to your vet about having extra on-hand to keep in your go-bag or where to get prescriptions filled in an emergency. Your vet can also show you or direct you to resources that can train you in basic first aid for your pet so you can provide aid quickly until you can get your pet to a clinic or animal hospital. Organizations like City of Long Beach Animal Care Services, SEEACA, and pet-related business can give resources to vets that can assist you in planning.

Last week, we discussed tips on sheltering for your pets, and this week's tip is about evacuation routes. If an emergency strikes that requires you to evacuate your home or relocate, it is important to learn your route to safety. Multi-story residences have fire evacuation routes posted in the building, and the City publishes suggest routes in the event or a tsunami or flooding. Practice the walk with your pet so they become familiar with the sights, smells, and sounds along the route. Emergency situations will heighten your pet's anxiety, so getting them used to the route beforehand can assist you when you need to leave an area quickly. Want to know more about evacuation routes? Reach out to Disaster Preparedness staff for maps and information.

This week's tip for is on sheltering with your pets. Some emergencies may require your to evacuate your home or relocate temporarily. While the City of Long Beach makes every effort to allow pets at City-run shelter sites, there may be instances in which they can accommodate. By researching your options for alternate housing for your pets, such as animal shelters or vet facilities, you can stay prepared. Having choices before disaster hits can make an already stressful evacuation a bit easier. Reach out to City of Long Beach Animal Care Services for information on places to house your pet.

This week's tip is putting together a "go-bag" or emergency kit for your pets. Our animals have special needs that are very different from a human go-bag. Your kit should include food and water for your pet for up to five days, a harness and leash, bedding, hygiene items, any medications, and comfort items like a favorite toy or extra blanket.
