โMantee is one of our favorite Armenian restaurants in Los Angeles. The family-run spot on Ventura has a tiny interior that feels like youโre eating inside your auntโs one-bedroom apartment, and a big back patio. Their namesake dish (meat-filled raviolis topped with garlic yogurt sauce) is good, but youโre simply not allowed to leave without some dolma (stuffed eggplant) and their plate of sizzling hot feta.โ - Brant Cox, The Infatuation LA
โ...the raw, pounded-beef kibbe nayeh has a sinewy presence behind its smoothness, and Mantee's namesake dish is pretty spectacular, a white-hot gratin bubbling with garlic-infused yogurt and a handful of crunchy little beef dumplings.โ - Jonathan Gold, LA Weekly
โBut thereโs nothing โliteโ about the house namesake dish, mantee. The tiny agnolotti-like dumplings of Turkish origin (sometimes spelled manti) are about as addictive as buttered popcorn. Inside the al dente pasta, nuggets of lemony vegetarian spinach filling or of subtly seasoned house ground beef make ideal canvases for the creamy sharp yogurt-garlic sauce that blankets them. Order the pita bread salad, fattoush, and you will instantly understand this chefโs philosophy. Pristinely fresh ingredients are tossed to order in a dressing of just-squeezed lemon juice and a few drops of extra-virgin olive oil. Instead of commonly seen lettuce, Darakjian uses purslane, a leafy succulent.
