Let’s talk about standing balance.
Many of our clients are referred to physical therapy for balance. There are many factors that play into standing balance. Fear plays a big roll in falling.
Single leg balance is a time to find your inner child and learn to participate in play. Challenge yourself to dance with gravity and develop loss of balance strategies to conquer the fear of falling.
PT Tip- Focus on your flying leg. This leg needs to be just as active as the standing leg rooted to the earth. In the featured image Tree Pose, the flying leg (tree branch) is connected to your standing leg (tree trunk). If you press your tree branch leg firmly into your tree trunk leg you create a stronger foundation to balance on.
Falling tip: You will loose your balance, just step out of the pose and place your foot on the ground. Stand by a wall to use your hands for extra assistance.
Always remember to keep breathing as you hold your balance pose. Laughter is always welcome too.

Pelvic Health Rehabilitation…
There are Physical Therapists that specialize in Pelvic Health. This encompasses Bowel, Bladder, and Sexual Function. Included in this specialty is prenatal and postpartum care. After any abdominal surgery your medical doctor should refer you to a pelvic health PT to assist in the recovery.
WHY?
Organs need to move inside the fascial sling system. Scar tissue and any adhesions that prohibit movement of the muscles and the organs can lead to disease and dysfunction.
WHAT?
Bladder issues can be the bladder muscle itself (neurologic bladder or infection) but most likely urinary incontinence or retention is due to under active or over active pelvic floor muscles.
Bowel issues involving motility (urgency, frequency and constipation) and incomplete bowel movements involve the pelvic floor, diet and exercise.
Sexual health directly involves the pelvic floor muscles for both men and women. From painful s*x to inability to or**sm, pelvic PTs are here to help guide the healing process.
For women, pelvic floor dysfunction starts after child birth and when unaddressed can continue to become an even worse problem over time.
For men, a diagnosis of prostatitis is given when urinary frequency is a symptom and then lab work comes back negative for infection. When this is the case a pelvic floor rehab specialist can help.
We understand this is hard for many people to openly discuss. Ask us for a referral.
Ignoring the issue and blaming the symptom on old age does not solve the problem. Let us help you age gracefully.

Marketing materials coming to life! Loving our branding on the stylist pens we ordered!
I had a little set back with the cards I ordered. Learning lessons every step of the way but Physical Therapists solve problems! So I have some creative ideas on how to use the postcards in our favor.
Thank you for your brilliant ideas.
Let’s talk about post-operative recovery for total hip replacement (THR)surgery.
Approximately 1-3% of individuals 65+ years old will undergo THR surgery. At most hospitals an evaluating physical therapist will determine whether the client is safe to recover at home or if they need more extensive care at a rehabilitation facility, skilled nursing facility or board and care. These recommendations are made to the surgeon based on the patient’s current physical condition, home environment and social support system.
As a patient, you will want to participate in physical therapy for all of the following: pain management, strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and gait training. Your MD will determine post-operative precautions and your PT will hold your hand through the whole process till you achieve your functional goals.
At Elderberry HPT, we can come work with our clients in most institutions and at home. Home health PT can only be provided to Medicare patients for a maximum of 4 weeks for it is billed under Medicare Part-A coverage. Usually, it is recommended you go see a PT in an outpatient orthopedic setting.
Sometimes this is hard for our clients to find a ride to the PT clinic. That is Elderberry HPT comes in. We bridge the gap between home health and outpatient facilities. We are a mobile outpatient clinic that serves our community in their homes. We can treat our clients until we both decide that the goals we set together have been met.
Personally, as a PT that has worked in an outpatient setting for over 7 years, evaluating and assessing an individual in his/her home allows me to develop home programs my clients will adhere too because they see first hand how and where to practice in their home. This especially comes in handy when caregivers are working with our clients, as we can first hand train both client and caregiver in the appropriate exercises and transfers that need to be practiced on a daily basis.
Sitting for 4 hours or more a day causes a decrease cardiovascular endurance, strength and balance.
At it’s worse, individuals who sit for prolonged periods of time not moving around lose a great amount of independence.
As we age, the saying “if you don’t use it, you lose it” could not be more true. Simple activities of daily living become burdensome. For example, getting up out of bed or out of a low chair becomes a tiresome task. For some the simple act of leaning forward becomes hard because of the fear of falling.
This message is for all those who have parents entering their golden years. For those of us that have to think about care giving for an aging adult. Exercise and physical activity is so important. I have watched older adults make their world so small because of lack of movement. They confine themselves to a favorite chair because it feels safe and all normal tasks of living have been pushed aside and eft for a caregiver.
It is never too late to start moving. Elderberry providers are here to help you and your loved one adhere to a movement program that will help maintain a level of independent living.

Mild Cognitive Impairment(MCI)
- early onset is seen in individuals younger than 65 years old
-Occurs in: 8% of the population 65-69 years old, 15% of the population 70-79 years old, 25% 80-84 years old and 37% of the population older than 85 years old.
Treatments
- Speech and language pathologists can help with mild cognitive decline by working on memory pathways
-ReCode is a program (referred in previous posts) that addresses inflammation in the brain though supplements, diet and exercise
-Physical therapists can help design safe and individualized physical exercise programs
There are no prescription medications to cure MCI. It is a commitment to a lifestyle change that will systemically reduce inflammation in the body and stop the brain from killing itself.
