The ILWU Southern California District Council stands in firm support of our professional mariners of the IBU (ILWU Marine Division) at the Catalina Island Company. They recently rejected their employer’s last best and final proposal and chose not to renew an extension while bargaining continues. Our IBU brothers and sisters have put the Catalina Island Company on notice, reserving their right to take economic action if a new agreement cannot be reached. As many of you know, peak season for tourism on the Island is right around the corner. Let’s hope the Catalina Island Company does right by our ILWU Marine Division family. Until then, these IBU members are committed to do whatever it takes to secure a fair contract and a fair wage for their labor.

If you have any questions please contact IBU Southern California Regional Director Cris Sogliuzzo at their hall located at 1911 N. Gaffey St. in San Pedro.

On Wednesday, January 3, 2024 ILWU Local 56, the Ship Scalers Union, did an immediate call for action to put pressure on Centerline Logistics to stop union busting with bypassing Local 56, by using a non union company to conduct hazmat and environmental clean up at the Port of Los Angeles. ILWU Local 56 made various attempts to speak with an operations manager, but all efforts were ignored. The ILWU SCDC responded with informational picketing and leafleting alongside members of ILWU Local 13, Local 94, IBU, as well as with L.A. City Councilman Tim McOsker, in which allies expressed solidarity and support for Local 56. Their fight is our fight and we stand in unity with locals pushing back against corporate greed, union busting, and division." “The most important word in the language of the working class is “solidarity.” - Harry Bridges

ILWU Statement on the Presidential Memorandum on Advancing Worker Empowerment, Rights, and High Labor Standards Globally

November 17, 2023

(San Francisco, CA) –The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) applauds President Joe Biden’s announcement of the Presidential Memorandum on Advancing Worker Empowerment, Rights, and High Labor Standards Globally (The Global Labor Directive) which centers workers' rights and conditions in how U.S. government agencies conduct international diplomacy.

The Global Labor Directive is an important step in reversing decades of labor-hostile trade deals and economic policies that put the interest of business over workers that has resulted in attacks on workers' rights at home and around the world, fueling corporate overreach and abuse leading to soaring rates of inequality, and an erosion of democratic rights.

President Biden’s policy will utilize diplomacy to promote labor rights and worker organizing around the globe, enable swift responses to violence and threats against trade union leaders, activists, and organizations, and utilize trade practices to advance labor rights.

This policy recognizes the important role that labor unions around the world play in increasing wages, improving health and safety conditions, combating racial and gender inequities, and strengthening democratic institutions and civil society.

“President Biden doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk,” said ILWU International President Willie Adams. “He has demonstrated his commitment to labor by standing alongside workers on the picket line and utilizing the power of his office to protect the rights of workers throughout the world with the full force of government policy. Workers share a common interest regardless of where we live. We rise and fall together.”

Ports Long Beach and Los Angeles support $1.2 billion hydrogen grant funding 10/16/2023

Ports Long Beach and Los Angeles support $1.2 billion hydrogen grant funding. by Stas Margaronis 9 hours ago

Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero said that projected $1.2 billion in hydrogen fuel grants to California would aid the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles in their efforts to reach zero emission goals. Cordero also renewed his promotion of Pier Wind, an offshore wind farm assembly port planned for the Port of Long Beach.
California and the San Pedro Bay ports’ efforts to establish a green hydrogen market to accelerate zero-emissions operations “got jump-started with an announcement from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today that it will award up to $1.2 billion in grant funding to a public-private partnership formed to lead California’s bid to create a hydrogen hub,” according to the Port of Los Angeles.

ARCHES The $1.2 billion in grants will go to California’s Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems – ARCHES.
ARCHES, on its website, states that it is “a public-private partnership to create a sustainable statewide clean hydrogen (H2) hub in California and beyond, utilizing local renewable resources to produce hydrogen with the objective to fully decarbonize the regional economy, while prioritizing environmental justice, equity, economic leadership, and workforce development.”

On October 13th, leaders of the City of Long Beach and the Port of Long Beach addressed the possibilities of new hydrogen investments.

Mario Cordero was joined by speakers that included Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson, Tommy Faavae, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 11, and Andrew Gonzalez representing the Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council.

In his remarks, Cordero said: “Hydrogen opens up the portfolio of the future to have other alternatives to move towards zero … particularly with heavy-duty trucks. We are enthusiastic about the hydrogen and fuel cells powering not only ... heavy equipment, drayage trucks … and also tugboats, locomotives, and other vehicles used to move cargo.”

Cordero explained that: “The Port of Long Beach and Los Angeles have partnered for many years, for example, in the 2006 creation of the Clean Air Action Plan, a sweeping, innovative, comprehensive plan to reduce emissions in this Port complex. And not only have we reduced emissions significantly, but the plan now is to move to zero.”

Pier Wind: Offshore Wind Port
Cordero said that a critical addition to the zero-emission effort was the proposed construction of the Port of Long Beach’s Pier Wind port: “We need additional power for our zero-emission programs. One idea we have … is to build a new terminal known as Pier Wind. The Long Beach City Council had a number of suggestions and ideas, and this was one of them. Pier Wind is designed to facilitate the assembly and deployment of massive floating offshore wind turbines. This innovative project will help California meet its renewable energy goals. That goal is to move forward to a hundred percent renewable energy in the future. Once completed, the Port’s Pier Wind project will move wind turbines taller than the Eiffel Tower and we will move this to the respective lease areas up and down … Central and Northern California. Pier Wind aims to help California harness its power from (wind resources) in order to generate renewable energy at a lower cost and enhance air quality by reducing the state’s reliance on fossil fuels. Lastly, I will say Pier Wind will be the largest facility specifically designated to accommodate the assembly of offshore floating wind platforms and turbines compared to any seaport in the United States.”

hosted their 5th young workers conference hosting young leaders up and down the west coast with special guests from the MUA, MUNZ, IBU, ITF, ILA and the IDC. It was an honor to have been apart of it and seeing multiple SCDC delegates partake in the conference and getting out of their comfort zones. SCDC’s and local 63 OCU’s very own Jamie Bulaich was an international facilitator and gave an amazing workshop on how social media can be used as a tool for political action. The theme of this years’ event was “we are all leaders” which reminded each and everyone regardless of time in their respective industry we all have a voice. Thank you to everyone that made this event happen!!
