For month, we wanted to answer the question - Why Chinatown?
My name is Jonathan Yang and I’m one of the owners of Thank You Coffee along with my partners Matt and Cody.
My 3 reasons for being in Chinatown are pictured above - my poh-poh, uncle and mom.
After immigrating from Hong Kong, my grandma and uncle lived and passed in Chinatown. My wife’s parents first lived in Chinatown after immigrating from Hong Kong as well.
My mom raised three kids (triplets!) on her own and as she went to work, our poh-poh and uncle took care of us in Chinatown everyday. I loved watching how my grandma interacted with her neighbors and treated all of them with kindness and respect. One of the reasons we’re here operating in Chinatown is that we hope to remind people that Chinatown is still here, and it’s significant not only in it’s historical role in Asian American history, but because of its living history - some of the senior citizens that paved the way for our generation still live here and are in need.
Chinatown is in a complicated situation, and it’s a reality that the largest population here is also in the greatest need, receiving the least help, and often unable to seek out resources even if they’re available.
We need people to come back to Chinatown and support the local businesses (especially the community serving ones) and I hope our guests go to those community serving businesses.
Some of our favorites include My Dung Sandwich Shop , , and
As a business here, we should always feel the tension of the needs of this historic community and consider what it means to be in it - and we always need to take off our shoes with respect.
We and other new businesses don’t make Chinatown better. Chinatown is unique and special because of its history and community - the aunties and uncles, grandmas and grandpas. They’re the OG’s, and we’re guests stepping into their community.
