Narrative coloring books that provide a creative and age-appropriate medium for parents, caregivers and educators alike to connect with young minds on important, but oftentimes challenging, topics of conversation.
National Cake Day is celebrated every November 26 of the year.
Here's a fun fact about Cakes! Modern cakes were baked in the mid-17th century! Back then, cakes were normally round and filled with fruits and nuts. It was not until the 1920's, the first CANNED cake mix was produced! Can you think of a cake mix being sold in a can, rather than our modern-day boxed mixes?
What will you do to celebrate National Cake Day?
Did you know that there is a full week to celebrate games and puzzles?!
National Game and Puzzle week lands on November 20 through the 26th every year. The days leading up and after the holidays, all games and puzzles should act as an inspiration for spending quality time with our families and loved ones. Being present with one another betters bonds as it bring awareness of the connection.
We provided a list of family-friendly games that you can purchase for your next game nights!
Happy National Game & Puzzle Week, from your Cures of Colors Team!

“Growing up in my home, sitting around the dinner table, there were many topics that were off limits. We didn’t talk about a family friend who struggled with ADHD, or why one student in school has two dads. These topics were taboo for my parent’s generation, even more so as immigrants from India.
Now, as a parent of two children, I understand how much the world has changed and the importance of having these conversations with them early on. Otherwise, we’re not preparing them for the real world. We’re not helping them build empathy.”

Struggling to Talk to Your Kids About Difficult Topics? Try Coloring Books Growing up in my home, sitting around the dinner table, there were many topics that were off limits. We didn’t talk about a family friend who struggled with ADHD, or why one student in school has two dads.

Parents and teachers - looking for a great holiday craft for the kids to do indoors this pandemic winter?
We have some super fun, festive, and FREE holiday face mask templates up on the website: https://curesofcolors.org/printable/. From Santa's beard to Rudoplhs' nose, fun gingerbread people and elves hard at work, with just a few key supplies (paper, printer, markers, scissors, string and/or tape) kids can color a paper mask and enjoy wearing it around the house and dressing up their favorite stuffed animal friends in the hippest 2020 fashion trend!
Another idea? Washable DIY Holiday Fabric Face Masks! Check out this video to get a quick glimpse into how easy this is for kids to make!
Supplies needed:
- Transfer paper (see video for what we used)
- Inkjet Printer
- Fabric Markers
- White cotton mask (washed/clean)
- Scissors
- Iron (steam setting set to OFF)
- Your favoirte holiday mask pdf template (curesofcolors.org/printable)
Step 1:
Print mask template onto transfer paper (be sure to follow the transfer paper instructions)
Step 2:
Color!! Be sure to use only light pressure when using the fabric markers on the mask so that the transfer paper doesn't accidentally come up onto the marker tip.
Step 3*:
Cut out the mask along the bold, solid border
Step 4*:
Iron cotton fabric face mask out as best you can to get out most of the wrinkles.
Step 5*:
Set the paper mask cutout onto the fabric mask with the image/color side down (see video). If too big, cut down to size. It seems to work best for masks as shown in the video if there is a bit of a space between the image and the edge of the mask (where there is more fabric gathered/wrinkled).
Step 6*:
Again, follow the instructions for your transfer paper, but typically the iron should be set to cotton setting and the steam setting (if applicable) should be OFF. Once heated, start ironing, checking occassionally to see how the image is transferring. TIP: IRONING TAKES A LOT LONGER THAN YOU MIGHT EXPECT. So add patience to your supply list!
Step 7*:
Once the image seems to be completely transferred, allow to cool for 2 minutes and then start to SLOWLY peel away the paper from the cotton face mask.
Step 8:
If there are any "boo-boo's" as our young artist called them, where the transfer paper didn't adhere properly on the fabric mask, just fill them in with the fabric marker.
Step 9:
For washing and care, refer to the transfer paper instructions.
NOTES:
- *Parent operation or supervision make be required depending on age of child for steps 3 through 7
- Great indoor winter activity for children ages 3+
- Cost for transfer paper and fabric markers: $10-$15 (you can make multiple masks for this!)
----------------------------------
TIP: Supplement this fun and creative activity with the FREE conversational coloring book “Kids vs. COVID-19” to maximize understanding and comprehension opportunities for children ages 4-8. Download here: https://mailchi.mp/e161fc23761b/freedownloads

How does the COLOR 🌈 play a role in your life❓
For our kids, the impact and benefit of coloring on their psychology and development are immense:
🧡Finishing a task
💚Making decisions
💛Getting better
💙Creating their own rules
💜Being in charge
Note too that colors, in addition to coloring, have a huge affect on our children's emotions and moods.
At CuresofColors.org we tap into the combined power of colors ➕ coloring by creating narrative coloring books to support parents, caregivers, and educators in meeting kids on their level as they navigate important topics of conversation.
There is no doubt that colors are fascinating. And they are all around us!! 🍁🌼🍎 🦋

Shoutout to two incredible nonprofit organizations that you can get involved with simply by - ❗️ get this❗️ - donating your old, used crayons. How simple and wonderful is that?
The Crayon Initiative "collects donated crayons from restaurants, schools and homes across the country, then melts them down and remanufactures them, reducing waste. Better yet, the recycled crayons are distributed to art programs at children’s hospitals across the U.S., brightening the lives of young patients during their stay."

Crayon Collection "got started almost ten year ago by upcycling gently-used crayons, saving them from landfills and getting them into the hands of children across the country... Today, Crayon Collection is taking crayons, artists, art education and sustainability practices into preschools, elementary schools and now high school classrooms, with the launch of our new Green Teen programming next year!"

One Mama says: "The kids loved the coloring pages, the [design your] superhero was definitely a favorite... The kids cut them out after they colored them and [my daughter] has taken hers for show and tell."
Warm our heart - we LOVE this! And we agree, the "design your hero" activity page at the back of the coloring book has been a huge hit with kids!
Let's all teach our tiny humans that people of all ages and sizes have the power to change the world, one kind and compassionate act at a time. May everyday be !
One of the biggest worries and challenges as parents is not knowing the right things to say or, worse, saying the wrong things.
What tools, tricks, or tips have you found helpful in having difficult conversations with your young kids? What's worked, what hasn't worked, what would have been great to have?
Talking to young children, especially about new and big global events like the COVID-19 pandemic, heavy things like racial injustice and systemic racism, or confusing topics like loss and mental health, are anything but easy.
Heck. It's not easy as an adult to even think about a lot of these things, let alone talk about them out-loud. But we know a super important and necessary part of raising kind humans is talking to them about BIG things. And the sooner the better, proactively versus reactively.
Visit CuresofColors.org and download a FREE kids narrative coloring-book to support you in connecting creatively with the children in your life through important topics of conversation.
