Tule Lake Stockade Diary

By Tatsuo Ryusei Inouye.

A rare wartime diary that sheds a light on Tatsuo Inouye’s fight for dignity during a three month long struggle in a freezing, chaotic high security stockade. He drew inner strength from his judo training and writing a detailed account of the food daily. Photos include images from the 1932 Olympic’s judo team, war years, and reunification of the broken family.

Artwork by daughter, Masako, is included. She was a delicate four-year-old whose healing finally began as she shaped her memories in clay seventy years later.

The annual Los Angeles Day of Remembrance commemorates the signing of Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Executive Order 9066 authorized the US military to forcibly remove persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast and set into motion their incarceration into concentration camps during World War II.

In this post:

"Remembrance" a Poster by Bob Matsumoto

Bob Matsumoto created this iconic poster as a way of honoring the families who were incarcerated in the ten concentration camps after the signing of the infamous Executive Order 9066.

Matsumoto, whose advertising work is in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, was incarcerated in Manzanar. The poster measures 20”x 20”, beautifully printed on heavy stock and suitable for framing. A wonderful way to honor your family.

JANM will also be hosting the 2024 Los Angeles Day of Remembrance Event on Saturday February 17 from 2 pm - 4 pm, RSVP link in bio.

In honor of this year's Los Angeles Day of Remembrance theme: Rooted in Resistance: Fighting for Justice during World War II, we would like to highlight books throughout the week.

No-No Boy

By John Okada. Foreword by Ruth Ozeki. Introduction by Lawson Fusao Inada and Frank Chin.

"No-No Boy has the honor of being the very first Japanese American novel," writes novelist Ruth Ozeki in her new foreword to John Okada's classic of Asian American literature. First published in 1956, No-No Boy was virtually ignored by a public eager to put World War II and the Japanese internment behind them. It was not until the mid-1970s that a new generation of Japanese American writers and scholars recognized the novel's importance and popularized it as one of literature's most powerful testaments to the Asian American experience.

No-No Boy tells the story of Ichiro Yamada, a fictional version of the real-life "no-no boys." Yamada answered "no" twice in a compulsory government questionnaire as to whether he would serve in the armed forces and swear loyalty to the United States. Unwilling to pledge himself to the country that interned him and his family, Ichiro earns two years in prison and the hostility of his family and community when he returns home to Seattle. As Ozeki writes, Ichiro's "obsessive, tormented" voice subverts Japanese postwar "model-minority" stereotypes, showing a fractured community and one man's "threnody of guilt, rage, and blame as he tries to negotiate his reentry into a shattered world."

I Would Meet You Anywhere: A Memoir

By Susan Kiyo Ito.

Growing up with adoptive nisei parents, Susan Kiyo Ito knew only that her birth mother was Japanese American and her father white. But finding and meeting her birth mother in her early twenties was only the beginning of her search for answers, history, and identity. Though the two share a physical likeness, an affinity for ice cream, and a relationship that sometimes even feels familial, there is an ever-present tension between them, as a decades-long tug-of-war pits her birth mother's desire for anonymity against Ito's need to know her origins, to see and be seen. Along the way, Ito grapples with her own reproductive choices, the legacy of the Japanese American incarceration experience during World War II, and the true meaning of family. An account of love, what it's like to feel neither here nor there, and one writer's quest for the missing pieces that might make her feel whole, I Would Meet You Anywhere is the stirring culmination of Ito's decision to embrace her right to know and tell her own story.

January 30 is Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution, the first day in the US named after an Asian American.

Available from the JANM Store and at janmstire.com:

Enduring Conviction: Fred Korematsu and His Quest for Justice

By Lorraine Bannai.

Fred Korematsu's decision to resist F.D.R.'s Executive Order 9066, which provided authority for the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, was initially the case of a young man following his heart: he wanted to remain in California with his white fiancée. However, he quickly came to realize that it was more than just a personal choice; it was a matter of basic human rights.

After refusing to leave for incarceration when ordered, Korematsu was eventually arrested and convicted of a federal crime before being sent to the internment camp at Topaz, Utah.

He appealed his conviction to the Supreme Court, which, in one of the most infamous cases in American legal history, upheld the wartime orders. Forty years later, in the early 1980s, a team of young attorneys resurrected Korematsu's case. This time, Korematsu was victorious, and his conviction was overturned, helping to pave the way for Japanese American redress.

Celebrating Ruth Asawa's Birthday! 🎉✨ Today marks the birthday of the renowned American sculptor, Ruth Asawa. Born on January 24, 1926, Asawa left an indelible mark on the art world with her unique wire sculptures. Known for her innovative and intricate work, she transformed simple materials into captivating pieces of art. Asawa's contributions to the world of sculpture and her advocacy for arts education continue to inspire and influence generations. Happy birthday, Ruth Asawa! 🎂🎨

Everything She Touched--The Life of Ruth Asawa

By Marilyn Chase.

This is the story of a woman who wielded imagination and hope in the  face of intolerance and who transformed everything she touched into art.  In this compelling biography, author Marilyn Chase brings Asawa's story  to vivid life. She draws on Asawa's extensive archives and weaves  together many voices—family, friends, teachers, and critics—to offer a  complex and fascinating portrait of the artist.

Born in  California in 1926, Ruth Asawa grew from a farmer's daughter to a  celebrated sculptor. She survived adolescence in the World War II  Japanese-American internment camps and attended the groundbreaking art  school at Black Mountain College. Asawa then went on to develop her  signature hanging-wire sculptures, create iconic urban installations,  revolutionize arts education in her adopted hometown of San Francisco,  fight through lupus, and defy convention to nurture a multiracial  family.

Ruth Asawa forged an unconventional path in everything she did—whether  raising a multiracial family of six children, founding a high school  dedicated to the arts, or pursuing her own practice independent of the  New York art market. Her beloved fountains are now San Francisco  icons, and her signature hanging-wire sculptures grace the MoMA, de  Young, Getty, Whitney, and many more museums and galleries across America.
