Thanks to everyone who came out to eat delicious cheeseburgers last year. This year should be a fun one and looking forward to slingin’ (and eatin’) as many burgers as I can.
For a long time I’d tell anyone who’ll listen that makes the best burger in LA, and it just so happens to be in one of the most beautiful dining rooms around. Its incredible dry aged patty is adorned classically with crispy lettuce, tomato, and thousands island, with some grilled onions to help perpetuate the mess on your hands. The poppy seed brioche is soft and squishy, as it must be, and together make for a incredibly perfect classic and special cheeseburger.
One can’t survive on burgers alone, so every now and then I need to embrace living in California and eat something fresh and light. We all know that avocado toast is so millennial and so LA, but it’s also so so delicious. This is much more than avocado toast though. Perfect everything bagel, cream cheese, avocado, tomato, onion, and sprouts. It’s the most perfect melding of my Jewish Los Angeles upbringing. It’s basically me in the form of food. The folks over Friends and Family do an incredible job turning simple ingredients into culinary explosions. The menu may say “bagel and avocado” but then you get this and it’s so much more than you could ever hope for. I feel good enough to go for a run.
Back in LA from the South so I finally made it to try the other Nashville style hot chicken sensation of LA, . I was skeptical because of how ubiquitous hot chicken brands have become, but these guys do a good job. Vibe wise the space is more like a chain, with tv’s etc, but the slider— which really is big enough to just call a sandwich— was tasty! It has all the great things going for it: pickles, slaw, crack sauce, and a slice of American cheese for good measure. I wouldn’t go above a medium spice level though. And even though the line was about 30 minutes my food came out in about 90 seconds, which is pretty remarkable.
I’ve finally had the burger at Husk so now I can head back home. The smashed patties with bacon mixed in were incredibly special and delicious. Great smokiness infused in juicy meat flavor and perfect sear, each bite was full of rich flavor and absolute enjoyment. The American cheese melted perfectly of course and the mostly raw but slightly cooked thin onions mixed so well with the cheese and meat it all felt like one perfect union. The seeded bun looked too big at first glance but somehow it wasn’t and had that squishiness I love. I want to eat this burger again and again. I expect to tweak my popup special onion and sauce to align more closely to this, because this was a pretty perfect double cheeseburger.
Eating all the meats . Incredible pork ribs, delicious brisket and pulled pork, some perfect collards and creamy mac and cheese. I feel pretty pretty pretty great right about now.
Helloooo Charleston. I’ve come for your cheeseburgers. First up is a deliciously smashed and special double, consisting of two 4 ounce patties with a nice sear and great juiciness. Clearly the fat ratio must have been high because it cooked down quite a bit and made for a one hand burger. Perfectly melted American cheese, griddled onions, and a special sauce... sounds a lot like my popup special I’ve been cooking! The super soft sesame bun here was incredible and I really need to up my bun game. Starting my burger trip pretty strong over .
These cord dog collabs are pretty wonderful. Pictured here is a juicy and delicious corn dog made with sourdough and covered with so many seeds says I’ll fail a drug test! Paired with a perfect mustard it’s likely the best corn dog I’ve ever eaten. I should have ordered two tbh.
I’m a fan of adding a second patty to a cheeseburger, and often I like bacon atop my beef, but I’ve *never* ordered one in classic LA style with pastrami on top, until today. My love for knows no bounds at this point, so I had to try the pastrami that fuels Rob’s passion. You know what? I’m in loves. The smokiness added a wonderful new dimension to the burger that is unlike anything I’ve eaten before but so many locals would probably say is old news. I grew up eating pastrami at Brent’s in the Valley but never understood why someone would mix these two worlds, and boy was I missing out. 🙌
I’m a believer in burgers as they come at iconic places like . This one comes in classic California style with tons of crisp lettuce and dripping in thousand island. The $10 special they’re running this week is a great deal if you’ve never been here before!
Anyone whose been to my popups knows I love a menu special. When I saw the picture of that delicious looking perfectly fried chicken at I had to rush to get one. The hot chicken craze is nice but on this Friday afternoon there was nothing I wanted more than wonderfully juicy and crunchy fried chicken between two buns. Pickles, lettuce, and an awesome house made buttermilk ranch, I could eat this sandwich weekly. I’m not saying Goldburger is gonna turn into a chicken account but expect more fried chicken sandwiches in 2019.
First burger of the new year was a special one. I finally got to catch the popup at and starting my year with this incredible burger was a delight. I’d guess it’s an 8 ounce patty, cooked over open flames to give it that great outside char and smokiness while maintaining a wonderfully pink center. The burger was pretty perfect— covered in plenty of American cheese and dripping with a garlic like mayo, really delicious pickles, and a perfect brioche that you don’t see very often (not big, bready, sweet, etc). Also had some incredible cabbage and wonderful sweet potatoes to round out the night. If this meal is an indication of what to expect in 2019 than I’m pretty stoked. 🤗
