NOTES ON 2018 TAX FILING: The tax filing season is beginning and I have grim news: the 2018 Tax Cut and Jobs Act that was passed last year was GREAT for corporations and really rich people; but a DISASTER for just about everyone else. The primary changes that affect the average working person or family: (1) No more personal exemptions (families of 2 equal families of 11); (2) no more deductions for employee expenses (union dues, uniform, seminars, professional improvement, telecommunications, etc.); (3) taxes you paid deductions CAPPED at $10,000 (for many, this means an increase of taxable income in the tens of thousands); (4) mortgage interest only for first $500,000 of mortgage). The GOOD NEWS: (a) businesses (including Schedule C sole proprietors and "pass-throughs like LLCs and partnerships and S Corps) get 20% of income tax free; and (b) corporations saved nearly 50% on taxes and billionaires saved billions.

The IRS never calls and threatens you. They do send certified mail.
