Come explore Olvera St. and stop by for a “torta de carne asada” and of course some delicious cajeta filled churros. Yummm!!!

Built in 1870, the Merced Theater was named in honor of Mercedes Garcia by her husband, property owner William Abbot. The three-story Victorian building was designed by Ezra Kysor who also designed the adjacent Pico House (1869) and later St. Vibiana’s Cathedral (1875).

As a center for live Spanish and English language performances in the late 19th century, the building would have been interchangeably known as “El Mercedes” or “The Merced” and today serves as a testament to the many women of the Pueblo that left their mark on our city’s early history.
