In 1908, Tokio Ueyama immigrated to the US to pursue a career as a painter. He went on to graduate from USC and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, before traveling Europe and Mexico in the 1920s to exhibit his paintings.

After he was released from Camp Amache during WW2, he opened Bunkado with his wife, Suye. Tokio continued to showcase his art locally before passing in 1954.

Did you know that Bunkado's building was the site of Los Angeles' first Japanese-owned business? In 1884, Hamanosuke Sugita opened Kame Restaurant at 340 E. 1st Street, marking the beginning of Little Tokyo. In 1945, over 60 years later, and after the end of Japanese internment camps in the US, Tokio and Suye Ueyama would open Bunkado at the exact site of Little Tokyo's humble start.

Earlier this week, we were joined by special guests to recognize and honor Mr. Sugita and Kame Restaurant. Special thank you to !!
