HOW SAFE IS YOUR MONEY?
The funds held by your bank are protected by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corp). If your bank fails, you will be made whole, subject to limits and exclusions: 1) The insurance covers checking, savings accounts, money market accounts, and CDs; 2) It covers up to $250,000 per depositor and ownership category; 3) It does NOT cover mutual funds, stocks, bonds, money market funds, and other securities.
Investors also have several layers of protection if the brokerage firm that holds their stocks, bonds, and mutual funds runs into trouble. First, brokerage firms registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) must be members of the SIPC (Securities Investor Protection Corp). Again, the coverage has limits and exclusions: 1) It only protects investors in case of insolvency or fraud, NOT against market losses; 2) It covers investors for up to $500,000 in securities and up to $250,000 in uninvested cash per type of accounts (IRA, Roth IRA, etc.); 3) It does NOT cover investments not registered with the SEC.
Next, the SEC has strict rules about segregating your securities. In a bankruptcy, the firm's creditors would have no claim on your assets. Finally, brokerage firms frequently purchase "excess" coverage to increase the amount insured.
