🧁🎂😍HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARILYN! 😍🎂🧁

Today we Celebrate the birth of a Hollywood Icon, Marilyn Monroe

In 1946, Hollywood photographer Joe Jasgur was asked to take some photos of Norma Jeane Dougherty. They turned out to be the photos that launched Marilyn Monroe's career. Happy Birthday, Marilyn (Jun 1, 1926).

05/31/2024

In 2001, preparing for our summer issue, there was a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like contest in honor of her 75th birthday. I thought, “Multiple Marilyns for our cover. How fun is that!” We chose the 1950s poolside at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (and one of Marilyn's "haunts" for the location. Our photographer, Anthony Nelson, was in his element with not just one but four “Marilyns” to wrangle.

YES, KAWAYY IS ART PLUSH TOY DRIVE at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles
Thru Jul 31

In honor of the new “Yes, KAWAII is Art -EXPRESS YOURSELF-” exhibition and in partnership with renowned multi-disciplinary artist and “King of Kawaii” Sebastian Masuda, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles is proud to collaborate with UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital’s Chase Child Life Program on a special donation drive to share the joyful and inclusive spirit of kawaii with the broader community.

A visit or stay in the hospital can be particularly unsettling for UCLA’s youngest patients. The Chase Child Life Program at the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital helps young patients cope with their fears and anxieties by offering an opportunity to play, and to forget – even just for a moment – that they're in the hospital.

Japanese kawaii culture has evolved into a global phenomenon, captivating people across borders and transcending cultural boundaries. The term “kawaii” translates to “cute” or “adorable,” yet its influence has come to extend far beyond aesthetics, encompassing fashion, art, technology, and even social behavior. With the exhibition, “Yes, KAWAII is Art -EXPRESS YOURSELF-,” JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles is excited to partner with artist Sebastian Masuda to share an in-depth look at the origins of the colorful kawaii style, its development and its profound cultural significance, transcending its perception as a fashion look or trend.

THE 2024 L.A. ART SHOW
A joint review written by Dana Benson & Chris Cassone

[...The LA Modern and Contemporary Art show opened last Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at the LA Convention Center and ran for five days, closing this past Sunday.

It featured over one hundred and twenty galleries, museums, and art organizations from over twenty-three countries from all around the world, exhibiting twenty thousand works of art. It is one of America's most comprehensive international contemporary art shows. Last year, there were thirty thousand visitors and thirty million in sales. The website says there were more visitors this time.

A fantastic array of paintings, sculptures, works on paper, installations, photography, design, video sculpture, and room-sized immersive installations were spread across two hundred thousand square feet of exhibition space.

We were overwhelmed by the volume and caliber of the art. Below are a few words about a few images we saw and some interviews. We apologize to the artists we missed or couldn't mention in this article. The show was too big! It took the two of us several days to understand what was there. And then it was over.

Good art provokes, and lots of good art, which this show had, provoked a lot of thought. One reaction was it is a fine line between what ends up in the museum and what doesn't...]

David Kordansky Gallery | INAUGURAL SAM GILLIAM AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCED BY DIA AND THE SAM GILLIAM FOUNDATION

Congratulations to Ibrahim Mahama, who has been selected to receive the inaugural Sam Gilliam Award, which includes a $75,000 gift and the presentation of a public program at a Dia location in fall 2024. Established in 2023 by a generous gift from the Sam Gilliam Foundation and Annie Gawlak, president of the foundation and Gilliam’s widow, the award will be granted annually over 10 years to an artist working anywhere in the world who has made a significant contribution in any medium and for whom the award would be transformative. Reflecting the critical support that grants provided Gilliam in developing his practice, the Sam Gilliam Award advances the foundation’s commitment to continuing his legacy as a teacher and champion of artists, and extends Dia’s mission of supporting and providing an important platform for artists.

Deploying patchworks of reused materials in large-scale textile and found-object installations, Mahama transforms built environments and gallery interiors into spaces for critical reflection on the social lives of objects. Collaboration is key to his practice, as materials are collectively gathered, remade, and installed. Furthering a communal approach beyond his installations, Mahama channels proceeds from his work into establishing interdisciplinary institutions in Tamale, Ghana, utilizing a circular economy to drive cultural regeneration and social transformation.

“I am deeply honored to have been selected as the recipient of the Sam Gilliam Award. I was first introduced to Gilliam’s important work as a student by my mentor Kąrî'kạchä Seid'ou, and it has been greatly influential to me ever since. The most important aspect of any community is to share their many gifts, even if they are born out of precarity, for within that point do we expand freedom to all life forms,” said Ibrahim Mahama.
