Our DTLA production facility and storefront opened in 2014. Happy International Women's Day! TEN YEARS AGO EXACTLY TO THIS DAY I received the first shipment of our gelato pints - transparent plastic pints so people would be able to see what's inside. We used permanent markers to write the flavor names. We still joke about some famous misspellings - they have become our recurring inside jokes! And then one day an inspector at our West 3rd St gelateria dinged our annual inspection with an overwhelming correction - told us that our hand-written pints were not up to FDA labeling standards. So, the slow process of designing / printing / transitioning to paper containers began (thank you Mid-City Inspector - you had initially scared me but in the end you pushed me to jump-start a 5 year project wayyyy before I pivoted the whole thing to do the grocery stores).⁠
But back to March 8 2014 - I had received 5600 of them, all on a credit card, of course. When I look at this photo I see myself smiling but I remember being terrified. Managing and running an inventory business is tricky and, honestly, should be terrifying! We had a very successful "bring back 7 pints and get a free pint program" over the following 8 years where we sanitized and reused thousands of these containers. I still have about 10-15 of them for food storage at home. But I am so so so so happy I don't have to order plastic cups anymore - just like with what goes inside the gelato, we are also careful about what our gelato goes into! That's al folks, congrats to kick-ass women once more and thank you for coming to my Ted Talk!

We shipped our first boxes in December of 2013 and those were very very different from the ones we use today. I knew from that very first shipment that we had to do the following:
- make every aspect of the boxes curbside recyclable
- create padding and layers for the product so that the -70F dry ice wouldn’t damage everything.
Today’s shippers are not only 100% curbside recyclable but so is every component of our packaging - zero plastic used! It took a long time but we got there!

I was recently doing a catering gig and the gentleman that ordered our services mentioned how he had read about us in the LA Times recently. I regret that I questioned him: “are you sure? I don’t think so” - I just couldn’t believe it. I love this city and I consider this a big honor to be part of the list in the LA Times- Where to get the best ice cream in LA.
ALSO I know that not having a cafe / Gelateria isn’t the same and that the vending machine (while an amazing solution for our grab-and-go customers) still doesn’t fill all the gaps. Yes, I am aware - it’s not ideal but it is what it is at the moment. When given the choice between closing everything or going into a ✨temporary✨ cafe hibernation mode to work on alternative revenue channels, I took the sledgehammer and demo’ed our front of the house to make way for more production space. To be frank, while it was pretty I was never fully happy with the front of the house anyway 🔨🔨Can’t be sad forever, onwards. Many shuttered businesses in LA are a reminder of gratitude and miracles of how I pulled through by the skin of my teeth. So, today I am celebrating, BIG TIME - for my belated discovery of being part of this list (thank you for your eloquent write-up). Thank you for cheering me on on this journey LA! I am working hard not to dissapoint!

Wow, this weekend was full of positive emotions. I sent out an email to all of our subscribers (even twice because I had to test an old list). And you all came! Some of you even came because you heard me on “In The Weeds” segment. I sampled, hugged, high-fived and told the story of my beautiful flavors - no extracts, fresh ingredients, artisanal+small-batch way of doing things in our DTLA kitchen. My daughter was there to scoop and sample too! I will be personally sampling in every single store so please tuned! Thank you to all of you! ❤️🤗🍨

We have an important announcement coming next week, probably THE BEST ONE since the start of the pandemic where, at times, it felt like it was the end to this beautiful culinary journey. I cannot wait to sit down, pour my feelings into a post and share it with you.
In the meantime, here is a photo of the Strawberry Balsamic Sorbet (post-churn), made with ORGANIC gaviota strawberries from McGrath Family Farms via – one of the best flavors we have, full stop period.
If you’ve supported us, purchased our pints, minis, told your friends about us – thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will be leaning on all of you a lot in the coming weeks. Because I listened to everyone’s feedback (made our pints cheaper while everything else went up in cost, created single-serving cups, brought our product to more locations) and worked TIRELESSLY to make things better while still sourcing the best ingredients I possibly could. You deserve the best – you deserve a pint of Strawberry Balsamic Sorbet that tastes like the most intense, pure form of delicious strawberry – not a ghost of the strawberry. I will be leaning on you in the next coming weeks to spread the word. Los Angeles folks, clear out your freezer space in the meantime

I love the sprouting culture of superettes, neighborhood grocers around Los Angeles! My retail journey started with my very first grocer who believed in me and my pints +minis. Today, I made the first delivery to The Golden Poppy Market in Cypress Park (next to my friend Mike’s – check them out). They now stock Blueberry Sorbet (organic regenerative blueberries from Murray Family Farms), Yogurt Cherry Gelato (cherries from Andy’s Orchard), Baku Saffron Gelato (made with saffron from my hometown of Baku) and Green Tea Matcha Gelato with Chocolate Waffle Bits (YUM, one of my top 5 of all time). Love you Michelle and Briand and please go and support by buying our gelato and eating it on their patio (scroll pictures for the photo of the pretty patio).

Lately I have been getting a bit sentimental and reminiscing a lot about the history and the beginnings of the gelateria, how everything started 11 years ago. I want to make a concerted effort to share more of it here with you. Tomorrow I am heading out to to pick up more Organic, Regenerative Gaviota Strawberries (pictured) for our Strawberry Balsamic Sorbet.
The second photo is from May 2013, 10 years ago. I have tweaked my Strawberry Sorbet recipe several hundred times except for one important component – the #1 ingredient by weight in this recipe is STRAWBERRIES (second is water). My philosophy of using the actual ingredient, so that you do not have to search for it when you try my recipes, still remains very part a huge part of Uli’s Gelato DNA.
