Celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium

The National Chicano Moratorium March, was held on August 29, 1970 in East Los Angeles. It was a peaceful protest against the Vietnam War. Families gathered to hear music and speeches at Luna Park. However, the police broke up the protest and by the end of the day 200 people were arrested and 3 were dead. Though ending in tragedy, the March was a significant moment in the Chicanx/Latinx community that inspired a new drive to celebrate Latinx culture and improve civil rights.

Happy Juneteenth!

On June 19, 1865, African American slaves were emancipated in Texas. Though, Lincoln had officially freed all slaves two years earlier, this was the act that actually ended slavery everywhere in the U.S. The Juneteenth holiday is a celebration of that event. Though it has been commemorated throughout the U.S., in June 2021 it was made a federal holiday by President Joe Biden. Here some resources that provide more information about this great celebration.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican Army’s defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla. It’s important to remember that it is not Mexican Independence Day, nor is it widely celebrated in Mexico. However, the actual history of this celebration has much more to do with Latinos in California around the time of the Civil War and their Anti-Confederacy stance. Join us and Supervisor Holly Mitchell’s Racial Justice Learning Exchange for a live event with Dr. David Hayes-Bautista, author of Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition. The event will be held at LA County Library’s AC Bilbrew branch on Wednesday, May 18 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm RSVP here: https://mitchell.lacounty.gov/rjle-may-18/

Celebrate Cesar Chavez!

March 31st is Cesar Chavez’ birthday! Cesar was a leader who used perseverance, humility and non-violent methods to better the lives of farmworkers who were toiling in unsafe conditions for low pay. Together with Dolores Huerta and Filipino labor groups, they created the United Farmworkers Union which fought for the rights of laborers. To achieve this, Cesar led work strikes, marches and even fasted several times to raise awareness. His efforts changed the lives of many, and in recognition for his nonviolent activism and support of working people, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
