📍 Pinnacles National Park, Paicines

A short drive from Monterey, Pinnacles boasts unique geological features such as rock spires and crags formed millions of years ago from stratovolcano volcanic activity. Due to its distance from the city, this is a great dark sky for stargazing. Into spelunking? There are two caves in the park to explore! The park boasts beautiful wildflowers in the spring so this would be a perfect weekend trip as the weather warms up.

📍 Sequoia National Park, Three Rivers

Did you know the largest grove of Sequoias is not in Sequoia National Park? It’s actually in Kings Canyon! However, the adjacent Sequoia National Park is more well known and visitors often come to the area to see this park, and end up going through Kings Canyon. Sequoia was the first national park created to protect a living organism to save the trees from logging. The largest tree in this park is known as General Sherman, weighs a staggering 2.7 million pounds and stands 275 feet tall from its 100+ foot base.

📍 Joshua Tree National Park, Twentynine Palms

While at first glance this park may not seem as impressive as other national parks, Joshua Tree is home to a widely diverse landscape across parts of both the Mojave and Sonoran deserts. 🌵 With elevations ranging from 900 feet to over 5,000 feet above sea level, Joshua Tree is home to a diversity of biological communities found nowhere else in such proximity. Sand dunes, dry lakes, flat valleys, extraordinarily rugged mountains, granitic monoliths, and oases are all found within its nearly 800,000 acres. Joshua Tree is often visited due to its close proximity to Los Angeles, as well as Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley.

📍 Redwood National Park, Crescent City

The Northern California coast is home to some of the oldest and the tallest trees on earth— the redwoods. Redwood trees have been reported to reach heights up to 375 feet, but the coastal redwoods typically span 300-350 feet tall. Over 40 miles of coastline are lined with Redwood forests. If you are looking for the perfect place to spend the day at the beach and also hike through a beautiful forest, this is the trip for you! This coastal forest is managed by both the National Park Service and the State of California as there is actually both a national and state park side-by-side.

Did you know? The largest redwood tree nicknamed General Sherman and coined “The Largest Living Thing” is not in either redwood park— it is actually located south in Sequoia National Park.

📍 Lassen Volcanic National Park, Paynes Creek

While one of the lesser known parks in California, Lassen is definitely worth the trip! Located a couple hours from Sacramento, Lassen is home to the largest plug dome volcano in the world, Lassen Peak, and the southernmost volcano in the Cascade Range. It is also one of the only places in the world to see all four types of volcanoes in one place— plug dome, shield, cinder cone, and stratovolcano. 🌋 🌋 🌋 🌋 When you visit you can see a variety of geothermal areas like the mud pots and boiling pools, but also crystal clear lakes and flower filled fields. Spoiler Alert: No touching lava here. 🚫

📍 Yosemite National Park, near Mariposa

Yosemite is among the most popular and most visited national parks in the U.S. Home to Bridalveil Fall, Half Dome, El Capitan, tunnel view, sequoia trees, and Yosemite Village, this park is visited by an estimated 3.5 million people per year. The beautiful landscape was carved over time by glaciers. Now the park experiences a warmer Mediterranean climate, making it a perfect park to visit any time of year.

📍 Channel Islands National Park, Ventura

Channel Islands is one of the few marine sanctuary parks. Best explored by boat, the national park is comprised of five islands from the larger island chain. Located in Los Angeles County, this is the closest National Park to USC and an easy day trip! Check out Island Packers for boat tours of the park. We recommend the whale watching tours!

📍 Kings Canyon National Park, Three Rivers

Did you know the largest grove of Sequoias is not in Sequoia National Park? It’s actually in Kings Canyon! Adjacent to Sequoia National Park, hop on over to see General Grant which is 3,000 years old and the second largest sequoia in the world. General Grant measures in at almost 270 feet tall and 107 feet around at its base. Kings Canyon is also home to the second largest canyon in the U.S.
