Housing Works of California
Housing Works is a bold way of tackling homelessness that's about dignity, not dependence.
Housing Works provides permanent supportive housing and support services to the most traumatized, vulnerable and needy members of our community—homeless individuals, victims of domestic violence, at-risk youth, Veterans, and people dealing with severe physical or mental illness or substance abuse.

Food Boost program!☀️
Pictured here are Housing Works staff at our grocery distribution we hold twice a month for our residents at Gramercy Apartments and surrounding community. 🏠
Thank you to the Sam Simon Foundation for these amazing plant-based grocery bags! 🥬
Here are some pictures from our weekly CAC workshops! Through a grant from the California Arts Council ( ), we have been providing weekly workshops with various instructors at our Single Site buildings. They have been teaching African drumming and dancing, spoken word, poetry, and more!
The first photo is of all of the instructors and our Executive Director, Celina Alvarez.
Pictured here is Stephen and Michael after Stephen stopped by Michael’s office to have one of their regular chats!
Stephen is one of our residents at Gramercy and has been housed through our organization for five years. 💛🏠
Pictured here is Marvis and Cindy! Marvis transitioned into his beautiful home recently after being in our FUSE program for two years. Cindy, our Housing Navigation Manager, said that, “this was quite a joy to experience. He shared that he still just can't believe it and it's been such a blessing.”
Marvis had experienced so much, including chronic respiratory issues and more, so we worked with him to connect with other services like pain management, healthcare, and a mental health clinic. We will continue to walk alongside him in his journey.
Welcome home, Marvis! 💛🏠
Eduardo and Marvis transitioned into their units at the end of January and went on this shopping trip a few days later. Now, they have items to fill up their homes!
Also pictured here are Cindy, Michael, and Robert, three Housing Works staff members, who assisted with this process at Cort Furniture Outlet in Glendale.
Happy Monday from the Housing Works Team! ☀️

10 years ago, Housing Works partnered with LA County's Dept. of Health Services, Housing for Health (HFH) program. Oscar and Ajin were two of the first 75 households served. Today, Housing Works is serving 401 households in collaboration with HFH. Please take 3 minutes to view this inspiring video which tells a powerfully inspiring story of hope and perseverance- link in our bio!
We are proud to partner with !

We recently started an exciting new food distribution effort as a part of our “Food Boost” program.
We are so excited to be partnering with the Sam Simon Foundation, who is providing us with 200 grocery bags two times a month!
Thanks to the Sam Simon Foundation and Hollywood Food Coalition, our Food Boost program is thriving.
More pictures to come!
If you read our digital annual appeal, you're familiar with the story of Bambi, a blind chihuahua, and Emitt, a Housing Works participant. (If you missed that story, you can read it through the link in our bio).
We now have an update!
At the end of December, Housing Works advocated for permission to have Bambi visit Emitt in hospice over the weekend in an effort to start bridging the reunification process between the two. After that weekend, Bambi continues to remain with Emitt PERMANENTLY!
We want to thank Bambi’s foster family, Ana and Adam, and everyone else who helped make this possible. Welcome home, Bambi!
During our "Season of Housing," we wanted to share a very special project with you.
This past year, Housing Works worked with Theresa Kennedy, Hollywood Community Housing, Barker Management, Inc., and Michael Kearns on this unique story project.
Theresa Kennedy created the concept and did the photography, and Michael Kearns interviewed Housing Works participants who moved into new apartments developed by Hollywood Community Housing and asked them to “tell us about a possession that means a lot to you, something you’ve carried with you on your journey.”
"The individuals who shared the stories that flowed from this one question were willing to be open and vulnerable. All we ask of you, our audience, is to adopt a similar mindset as you read their life-affirming stories, and take in these revealing portraits of them with their item." -Sarah Letts, Executive Director, HCHC
Check out the full "One Item" Project through the link in our bio!
Our annual appeal is here! 🎉

Need last minute holiday gifts that give back?
We are collaborating with MISA Los Angeles and Urban Quality Living for a holiday fundraiser! 🧡🏠
Michelle, a Housing Works participant who receives a monthly stipend from UQL, tells us in this video how this extra income helps her and her family. Purchases you make at MISA Los Angeles’ store will go towards helping more people like Michelle.
MISA Los Angeles Urban Quality Living, Inc.
Over the past two years, Housing Works has partnered with Urban Quality Living to provide our unhoused neighbors in Los Angeles with a monthly financial stipend to help address food insecurity, living and transportation expenses, and even help offset the cost of medical prescriptions. This stable source of income has significantly impacted their transition as they journey out of homelessness into permanent housing.
During the month of December, MISA Los Angeles will be contributing a portion of every in-store sale to further support and expand the number of participants in this program. Please visit MISA LA online to support our homeless community.
