October happenings 💛

“I was probably 3 or 4. My dad took me out. We caught a wave, and then he picked me up and dropped me on a boogie board next to him. It felt like I was going a million miles an hour. That was the moment I was hooked. The thrill. The excitement. I was a tiny little kid, fascinated with the ocean.”

This is Luke Shepardson. He’s a surfer, lifeguard, father, and winner of the 2023 Eddie Aikau Invitational.

Like most kids on the North Shore, Luke grew up dreaming of going pro. He spent his free time in the water, and eventually started traveling the world to compete. But then an unexpected surprise came. Luke learned his girlfriend was pregnant. It was time to retire from his ambitions.

“I realized, it wasn’t the 2000s anymore, with companies just handing out money. I had to figure out something else to do. So I planted roots, took a job as a lifeguard, and I love it. It’s a way to give back. I get to use my skills from surfing, and I don’t get burned out. I spend all day at the beach, my favorite place in the world. I’m helping others, and then I get to be a dad.”

In 2023 he had his chance to compete again. The Eddie Aikau Invitational was making its big return—one of surfing’s most prestigious events, for the first time in seven years, right in his backyard. He really wanted to enter, but the problem was that he was scheduled to work that day, and no one could cover his shift. At the last minute, he was able to get three hours of vacation approved. 

“The Eddie is a different type of contest. It’s a celebration of Eddie’s life. It all happened so quickly I didn’t have a moment to think about the competition. When it came time for my heat, it felt like getting to relax from working all day. I got to do what I love: go surf big waves.”

Since winning The Eddie, Luke’s focus hasn’t changed. “I love lifeguarding and being a dad. I get to live on the North Shore, and surfing is all for the enjoyment of it. I’m still chasing the best wave of my life, and I’m doing it to stay healthy and happy.”
