Los Angeles Press Club, The First Amendment Coalition and National Press Photographers Association, joined by a coalition of 20 press rights and civil liberties organizations, call on California officials to operate with maximum transparency and respect the role of the press in observing and documenting sweeps of homeless encampments.
"Press Rights Coalition Calls on California Officials to Respect First Amendment Rights and Ensure Transparency at Homeless Encampment Sweeps"
We have serious concerns about the recent law enforcement treatment of journalists in Sacramento and Los Angeles. In at least four documented instances in recent days, journalists faced the threat of arrest for covering homeless encampment sweeps from public sidewalks and streets, even though the journalists did not obstruct law enforcement or interfere with activities.1 Journalists should be able to do their jobs while government workers do theirs.

Statement from the Los Angeles Press Club on the Release of Evan Gershkovich
The Los Angeles Press Club celebrates the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was unjustly detained in Russia on baseless charges. Evan's freedom, secured as part of the largest East-West prisoner swap since the Cold War, marks a significant moment in the ongoing struggle for press freedom and the protection of journalists worldwide.
We are relieved that Evan is now safe and reunited with his loved ones after enduring unimaginable hardship. His wrongful imprisonment was a stark reminder of the perils that journalists face when reporting the truth, particularly in regions where press freedom is under constant threat.
The Los Angeles Press Club remains committed to advocating for the rights of journalists everywhere and condemns any attempts to silence the press through intimidation, violence, or imprisonment. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues worldwide who continue to risk their lives in the pursuit of truth and justice.
We also acknowledge the complexity of the negotiations that led to this unprecedented exchange and recognize the efforts of those who worked tirelessly to bring Evan and others home.
While we celebrate this victory, we must not forget the many other journalists who remain unjustly detained or persecuted. The Los Angeles Press Club will continue to support initiatives that promote press freedom and protect journalists from such dangers.
Welcome home, Evan.
THANK YOU to everyone who joined us last Sunday at the 66th Southern California Journalism Awards celebrating the best reporting Southern California has to offer.

Jane Seymour to Receive the LA Press Club’s Public Service Award
Actress, producer, artist and philanthropist Jane Seymour has been named the Los Angeles Press Club’s 2024 Bill Rosendahl Public Service Awardee.
“While Jane Seymour has entertained audiences through memorable film and TV roles, she also has made many contributions off-screen,” said LA Press Club President Lisa Richwine. “She encourages kindness and helping others through the Open Heart Foundation and has inspired women by speaking up about ageism.”
Ms. Seymour is a multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winner and recipient of the Officer of the British Empire (OBE). She has proven her talents in virtually all media, the Broadway stage, motion pictures and television. Her love of art and color has led to her great success as an artist and designer.
Seymour currently stars in the series Harry Wild for Acorn TV and made history with her six-season “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” series, blazing a trail for family-worthy programming to return to TV, broadcasted in nearly 100 countries.
She has starred in many classic movies, including “Lassiter” with Tom Selleck, “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve and “Live and Let Die” opposite Roger Moore — and has never stopped working.
On Broadway, she originated the role of Constanza in the Tony Award-winning production of “Amadeus,” and the list goes on.
Actively involved in numerous charitable causes, but maybe most known for her Open Heart Foundation, Seymour supports children in need, creates awareness for Women’s Heart Health and much more.
She has six children and six grandchildren.
Full bio here.
The Public Service Award will be presented at the 66th SoCal Journalism Awards Gala on Sunday, June 23 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.
The full line-up is as follows:
Jane Seymour — The Bill Rosendahl Public Service Award
Stephen A Smith — The Joseph M. Quinn Award for Lifetime Achievement
Evan Gershkovich — The Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism
Amanda Salas — The President’s Award for Impact on Media
Mickey H. Osterreicher — The Guardian Award for Contributions to Press Freedom
The evening is dedicated to the memory of Ruth Ashton Taylor and Sam Rubin.
Ruth Ashton Taylor was the first female newscaster in Los Angeles and the only woman on Edward R Murrow’s postwar radio documentary unit. She died in California earlier this year at age 101.
Sam Rubin was a long-time entertainment reporter for KTLA and a well-loved TV personality.
More than 500 journalists and media executives are expected to attend this prestigious event.
The SoCal Journalism Awards Gala is a fundraiser for this 501c3 charitable organization and makes it possible for us to fund our educational programming and our mentorship program for young journalists from underserved communities, as well as provide grants for investigative journalism, for defending the First Amendment, and give out scholarships and much more. All contributions are tax-deductible.
The LAPC is one of the oldest and most respected journalist organizations in the nation with a storied history of honoring the most celebrated reporters of the past century. In recent years, the Los Angeles Press Club has continued to uphold its tradition of acknowledging excellence in spite of the fact that journalism itself has struggled in the face of ever-declining budgets.

Evan Gershkovich Named the 2024 Daniel Pearl Awardee
The Los Angeles Press Club is proud to announce that the 2024 Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism will go to Evan Gershkovich of the Wall Street Journal, the same outlet Daniel Pearl worked for.
“We are extremely pleased to see the Daniel Pearl Award being awarded to Evan Gershkovich who, like Danny before him, has come to symbolize Press Freedom and the importance of truthful reporting,” said Judea Pearl, speaking for both himself and his family. “We hope this award brings hope and encouragement to Evan as he is awaiting justice, and sends a strong message to the Russian Government that, despite attempts to disrupt world orders, the free world still holds the safety of journalists as a sanctuary of civilized society.”
Gershkovich has been wrongfully detained in a Russian prison for more than one year. He was arrested by Russia’s Federal Security Service on false allegations and charged with espionage in March 2023. This is the first time since the Cold War that Russia has brought allegations of espionage against a U.S. reporter in Russia. Both the Journal and the U.S. government vehemently deny the charge against Evan.
“Evan’s situation is a stark and painful reminder of just how critical an independent and free press is today. There is nowhere Daniel Pearl’s legacy looms larger than The Wall Street Journal, and we’re incredibly grateful to the Los Angeles Press Club for recognizing Evan and for highlighting what’s at stake at a time when many are emboldened to silence journalists simply for doing their job,” said Paul Beckett, assistant editor for The Wall Street Journal.
Since 2002 the Los Angeles Press Club, in conjunction with Judea and Ruth Pearl, the parents of slain Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl, have handed out this prestigious award. Sadly Ruth left us in 2021.
The 2024 award will be presented by Judea Pearl at an Awards Gala Dinner at the historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 23. Past recipients include Richard Engel, Anna Politkovskaya, Bob Woodruff, Jason Rezian, Nima Elbagir and Charlie Hedbo.
The Los Angeles Press Club has a long and storied history as one of the oldest and most prestigious journalist organizations in the country, with a solid tie to the Entertainment Industry and the Communities around us.

Mickey H. Osterreicher to Receive the LA Press Club’s Guardian Award
https://lapressclub.org/mickey-h-osterreicher-guardian-award-2024/
Mickey H. Osterreicher, general counsel to the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), has been named the Los Angeles Press Club’s 2024 Guardian Awardee for Contributions to Press Freedom.
“It’s hard to summarize how much Mickey has done for press freedom,” said Adam Rose, chair of the LA Press Club’s press rights committee. “He’s given philosophical oration in Congress and navigated airspace regulations for drone photographers. His voice rings clearly with journalists and government officials alike.”
These are just a couple of reasons the LAPC is honoring Osterreicher.
“Mickey has brought his unique expertise to bear in Southern California on many occasions. Across our region, a generation of press rights advocates continues to learn from his deep knowledge and thoughtful approach,” Rose said. “And long before our own advocacy, Mickey was helping to bridge understandings with our local law enforcement.”
Osterreicher is an award-winning photojournalist with over 40 years of experience in print and broadcast. As a lawyer, Osterreicher has been actively involved in such issues as: cameras in the courtroom, the federal shield law, media access, public photography, copyright, and the use of drones for newsgathering.
As a member of the IACP Public Recording of Police advisory committee, he helped draft the manuals and provide training on this issue. He has also instructed at numerous annual IACP and National Sheriffs Association (NSA) meetings and provided training on this subject to many law enforcement agencies nationwide.
He has been a uniformed reserve deputy sheriff with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office since 1976. He was also an adjunct lecturer in photojournalism at SUNY at Buffalo and an adjunct law professor in media and the law at the University at Buffalo Law School. In 2021, he was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
He is admitted to practice in New York State and several federal jurisdictions around the country including the U.S. Supreme Court.
Full bio here.
The Guardian Award will be presented at the 66th SoCal Journalism Awards Gala on Sunday, June 23 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
