As Phil said, the only constant is change - and with joy, and sadness, and after 40 years - it is time to celebrate new owners at Red Barn. The Carter family is so happy to welcome Theresa's Country Feed and Pet to Red Barn Feed and Pet - and we know that you will welcome them too. Beginning September 14, 2023 - we will do the handoff the Theresa's to continue for the next 40 years of providing top quality animal care supplies to the San Fernando Valley at the best prices. Phillip Carter, owner of Red Barn Feed and Pet, dies at 90 Protector of animals and people, the San Fernando Valley businessman will be remembered at a celebration of life on June 11.

For those who had the great fortune of meeting Phil Carter, Red Barn's owner and lifeblood for 40 years - you know first hand what a special person and force of nature he was. It is with unbearable grief that we have to share that Phil has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is no longer in daily attendance at Red Barn. We will be celebrating his life at Red Barn in June. Please ask us for details and thank you for making each day a joy for him - he loved everyone who walked in through the doors.

Precious Salem. Our friend and companion for almost 20 years has crossed the rainbow bridge. Please make a donation to your favorite animal rescue in his name, adopt a black cat (they are good luck) and be extra kind to our team next time you come in. We are grieving his loss.

With the 4th of July tomorrow, don't forget to prepare your pet and make sure they're wearing their bling! More pets get lost during this time than any other, so make sure your furry friend is wearing a collar with accurate contact information and, if they're microchipped, that the information is up to date.

DOG DAYS are upon us! The countdown has begun to the 4th of July! Our busiest day and weekend of the year for lost dogs. Many of you have already experienced memorial day fireworks in your areas and we are already seeing lots of dogs loose.

NOW is the time to do your part. See below for a few of the most important tips to follow. NOW is the time to get those collars on, NOW is the time to get your tags on with current numbers and NOW is the time to get your microchips updated. Also, call in your prescriptions soon for meds if thats what your dog needs during the night of the 4th.

Make sure your RELIABLE dog sitters are dialed in if you are going to need one.
CHECK all your gate locks and fencing now to make sure they are secure as even the dogs who normally won't jump, dig or climb or leave a back yard, WILL GET OUT during fireworks if left with access to the yard.

For those of you with local missing pet/lost pet pages in your cities, please be sure to contact those pages directly with any lost or found dogs the day and night of the 4th that you may find. This will help owners and rescuers and the shelters.

The shelter intakes and resources will be MAXED! Anything you can do to help a found dog by posting them on a missing pet page, getting them scanned for a chip, putting up a hand written found flyer in the area and holding onto them for a bit would help the Shelters, help the Dogs and the Search and Rescue Teams.

🔥Dog Days of Summer is here so please keep your pets and animals safe from this Extreme Heat! Important Information below!🔥

NEVER LEAVE YOUR PETS IN A PARKED CAR
On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or die. Humidity makes it hotter also. "Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body. If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levels—very quickly."

PROVIDE PLENTY OF SHADE & WATER!
You must provide water, whether your pets are inside or out with you. Any time your pet is outside, make sure they have protection from heat and sun and plenty of fresh, cold water. In heat waves, add ice to water when possible. Tree shade and tarps are ideal because they don't obstruct air flow. A DOG HOUSE does not provide relief from heat—in fact, it makes it worse.

LIMIT ACTIVITY & EXERCISE!
On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours, and be especially careful with pets with white-colored ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short-nosed pets, who typically have difficulty breathing. Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible. Always carry water with you to keep your dog from dehydrating. Also note fans don't cool off pets as effectively as they do people.

WATCH FOR HEATSTROKE!
Extreme temperatures can cause heatstroke. Some signs of heatstroke are heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure and unconsciousness.
Animals are at particular risk for heat stroke if they are very old, very young, overweight, not conditioned to prolonged exercise, or have heart or respiratory disease. Some breeds of dogs—like boxers, pugs, shih tzus and other dogs and cats with short muzzles—will have a much harder time breathing in extreme heat. Call a vet if you see symptoms or have concerns.

IF YOU BELIEVE YOUR PET OR ANIMAL IS SUFFERING FROM HEATSTROKE!
Move your pet into the shade or an air-conditioned area. Apply ice packs or cold towels to their head, neck and chest or run cool (not cold) water over them. Let them drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Take them directly to a veterinarian.

These tips are from the Humane Society and save animal lives! Please it's also important to check in on your elderly neighbors to make sure they and their pets are ok!

Update: Clayton was adopted!!

Omg, look at this happy guy! He may be happy but he is in real danger as he sits in a shelter!

This is Clayton, the shepherd we accidently (but thank goodness) caught in Calabasas, California. We had seen reports of a loose German Shepherd roaming but they were over a mile from where we were trying to catch a much smaller dog. To our surprise, this guy travelled and found himself right at our trap and walked right in! He had been loose for at least 18 days and was clearly hungry and now finally safe!

Clayton has been on a stray hold at the Agoura Animal Care Center and sadly his humans didn't come for him. Well lucky for someone who wants a Shepherd, he is available now for adoption.

Clayton is about 4 years old. He is kinda shy but warms up. He did fine in playgroup with other dogs but was more of a watcher than an engager. He walked well on a leash but is apprehensive of the leash. This good boy can be in a home with calm dogs and older kids (only because of his size). Let's show this lost boy that he can be loved and have a forever family! Let's get him out of the shelter and safe into a home or rescue!
