Congratulations to BP mentor, Dr. Ruiz Rueda!!! 🎉🎉
CSUN microbiologist Cristian Ruiz Rueda has received a $1 million, four-year grant from the National Science Foundation to study antibiotic resistance in bacteria. His research will explore how bacteria use their metabolic networks and efflux pumps to resist antibiotics. This project will also provide CSUN students hands-on research opportunities, integrating real-world experiments into classroom learning.

My heart is full tonight! We hosted our 10 year BUILD PODER at CSUN reunion at CSUN tonight and it was an emotional reunion to see so many alumni return home!
So many wonderful stories and memories shared tonight! I am proud of each and every one of the BP alumni - changing the face of STEM! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I am so grateful to all the mentors who also came out tonight to support the students! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your mentorship was critical to the success of BUILD PODER!
And to each member of the BP team, I am forever grateful! You are the community of support our students needed at critical times in their lives. Thank you for all you do (and did) day in and out!
So many students came from far away for this reunion! I feel so blessed!
While we wrap things up during the BP no-cost extension, we won’t forget the lessons we learned about mentoring undergraduate students in research!
BP will leave a legacy in the new Office of Undergraduate Research - CSUN,
And BP will live in each and everyone one of us.
This was an extraordinary journey and I was blessed to be part of it.
Gracias, with all of my heart ❤️ ❤️
Check out the latest publication from our research team led by Dr. Sungmin Moon. In this article, we found that BUILD PODER students reported higher levels of critical mentoring than non-intervention participants and critical mentoring was, in turn, predictive of higher mentorship satisfaction, science identity, and science self-efficacy.
What does this mean? CRT-informed intervention was more effective by developing an environment in which high-quality, critical mentors influenced students’ sense of science identity and self-efficacy.

Check out BUILD PODER alumni Akemi’s daily adventure:
“I keep spacecraft microbially clean so when we go to other planets (or moons) for habitability/life detection science, we aren’t contaminating our results with Earth life. We also don’t want to contaminate the science sites (like Mars) for future missions, and in the case of Mars Sample Return, we don’t want any super hardy bacteria making a round trip with decades of space-induced changes. We launch from Florida, so in a few weeks our team is shipping out there to support the last little bit of assembly and testing that has to happen before then!” - Akemi Hinzer

Our Story
Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Promoting Opportunities for Diversity in Education and Research (PODER) is an undergraduate research training program sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). BUILD PODER was established at California State University, Northridge in 2014 with a $22 million grant from the NIH and is one of 10 BUILD sites across the country. BUILD PODER students take advanced research methods classes and work directly with professors across many disciplines on research projects that relate to health and health equity! We seek to generate a vibrant, socially responsible and open environment for asking new research questions and using new methods to reduce health disparities. In the long-term, our goal is to increase representation of those whose health has been traditionally poorer to become biomedical researchers themselves.
The application period for the 2018-2019 cohort is open until 5 p.m. on March 2, 2018. Please visit our website to apply! https://www.csun.edu/build-poder/applicants
The BUILD PODER office is located at the garden level of the CSUN Oviatt Library, in Oviatt 27. For more directions, call 818-677-4863.
