AMERICA FEVER: ROSE OF SHARON

The national flower of South Korea - 무궁화 ‘mugunghwa’ - is renowned for its beauty and resilience. It is also known as the Rose of Sharon, which in Biblical allusions point to its ability to bloom in the desert. The woman arising from the hibiscus references the Birth of Venus, symbolizing the arrival of Korean immigrants into a harsh land to begin their new life.

The modernized hanbok indicate a desire to transform while holding onto the vestiges of tradition, while the bottari (bundle of items) indicate the weight of the past that has to be brought into this new world.

Chuck Amos has been the mentor in my head for over two decades and is responsible for many many hair campaigns / celebrity styling you’ve seen with beautifully sculpted hair. His works and dedication to the craft mean more than what I can post on any social platform. And the more of his works I study, the more empowered I feel! Confirmation that I’m on the right path!
