The fabric I just cannot get enough of is our IL019 Mediumweight linen. I'm sure you can agree with me, that once you've tried it, it's hard to think of any other fabric to reach for for softness, easy sewing and care, as well as being kind to the planet.

The hardest part of using this fabric would be choosing the color! We always have rotation of classic and seasonal colors, and the best ones always sell out so fast. So it can be hard to cut into some of those precious colors you know may never come back.

But what about those times when you can't choose? I think Alisha has found one of the perfect ways of using all your favorite colors in a way they can be appreciated daily.

The Great Polymath: Sophie Taeuber-Arp⁠

From 1916 to 1929, Taeuber-Arp taught textiles at Zurich’s School for Applied Arts, specialising in textile design. Throughout this time, she worked tirelessly as a designer, creating vast reams of textiles, embroidery and theatre costumes. Her bold and playful patterns featured striking geometric patterns and vibrant colours, echoing the rising abstraction of the European avant-garde. The starting point for much of this early design work was through colourful drawing on paper, which became a springboard for so many of her creative endeavours. Having trained in textiles, Taeuber-Arp based these drawings on the gridded structure of fabric construction, with vertical-horizontal compositions, modular constructions, and interlocking geometric shapes. Taeuber-Arp experimented freely within these rigid confines, toying with an endlessly recyclable variation of repeat patterns, tactile textures, and harmonious colours.⁠

Egyptian-French artist Ghada Amer has a widely varied practice spanning sculpture, printmaking, video and installation, but she is arguably best known for her alternative embroidered paintings. From a distance, they might look like expressionistic canvases, but peek closer and they are laced with hidden elements of erotica aimed not for the male gaze, but for the emancipated woman, who she encourages to celebrate, and own, her body. Embroidery is a subversive choice for Amer, through which she hopes to speak to women with a visual language that has been traditionally associated with femininity for centuries. She says, “I like the idea of representing women through the medium of thread because it is so identified with femininity.”⁠

Today we are throwing the spotlight on our lighter than air cotton muslin which is perfect for baby swaddles, bedding, and more! This fabric comes in a wide range of coordinating colors and prints, so you can mix and match to your hearts content!

Essentially, this cloth is two very fine cotton fabric layers that are joined together by interweaving. This process creates little pockets of space and air that are left in between the two layers making the overall cloth very light, soft, breathable, and voluminous without becoming heavy. Of course, this fabric also has Oeko-Tex certification and is a part of the BCI (Better Cotton Initiative).

Glitter and Gold: The Tactile Art of El Anatsui⁠

“One of the ideas that we were always wanting to inculcate in our students is: you don’t have to go to the art shop to buy your materials, the materials are all around you. The tools are all around.”⁠
⁠
Some of his earliest found object work was made from driftwood sources from a beach during a residency in Denmark, including Akua’s Surviving Children, 1996. From here he began working with various other gathered materials ranging from milk bottle lids and cassava graters to driftwood and foil bottle tops. It was the bottle tops that gave him the most longevity, once he discovered he could cut them up and link them together with copper wire to create mutable sculptures with a densely layered and richly tactile hand-made quality. He said of this process of discovery, “Initially I thought it was going to be a short run. But as I kept working with this, it kept revealing new potential.” He adds, “I’d say that the bottle caps have all the potentials of oil colour, acrylics and water colours … depending on how you are combining them.”⁠
