Marine Iguanas of the Galapagos

These guys we're some of my favorite animals I encountered while visiting the Galápagos Islands...Marine Iguanas that lived in both the water and on land very cuddly with each other... often just laying on top of one another for hours under the sun.

Marine Iguana
"The Galapagos Marine Iguana is truly one of the most striking animals in the Islands. These dark colored iguanas feed underwater, gnawing algae off of rocks that are sometimes as deep as 15 meters (50 feet)! Its body temperature can drop several degrees while feeding, so they are commonly seen soaking up sunshine on lava rocks, bringing their temperature back to a normal level. They are common throughout the islands and a favorite among visitors.

A most remarkable animal, the marine iguana can be seen year-round at many Galapagos visitor sites. On Punta Suarez (Española) lives a variety of the marine iguana with green and red coloring: it is sometimes called the "Christmas Iguana." The mating season for marine iguanas begins at a different time on different islands, but generally around November-December. Males can often be seen in December "fighting" one another by butting heads: this is to establish dominance. In January and February, females dig a nest and lay the eggs, which begin to hatch in late May. June is a great time to see cute baby marine iguanas!

Where is it found: Can be found on most islands in the archipelago, at the shoreline.
When is it found: All year round.
Interesting fact: Found only on the Galapagos Islands, has the unique ability to live and forage in the sea."

I've always been a fan of dolphins 🐬.. I am in awe at their intelligence and compassion

When I was young I heard stories of how they would circle someone in the water in trouble threatened by sharks until they were safely rescued, their spirit is one of play.. leaping in the air, surfing the waves, they seem to have life's porpoise 🙈 down.

So you can imagine how amazingly lucky I felt to get these three shots...
I was on a boat with a group of people we were returning from snorkeling at Kicker rock out at sea off the Galápagos Islands.

I just happen to be sitting there on the boat with my DSLR in my lap thinking I might get a cool picture of a seagull and taking pictures of fellow passengers on the boat

Although there were some dolphins trailing our boat I was not expecting this to unfold right before my eyes 👀
I've never grab my camera so quickly ...fired off about five shots ..these three were the money shots for me
And to date these are probably three of my favorite photos I've ever taken. One of those "right place, right time and prepared" trifectas photographers dream about, & I couldn't believe it happened to me 😀 thank you lil fella! wherever you are today!

I Was lucky to catch a photo of theseJoyful kids in their traditional Andean clothing on the streets of Cusco Peru

Quechua women's dress today is rooted in traditions from pre-conquest Peru (a fusion of Inca and Huari cultures), and Spanish Colonial peasant dress (often with some modern touches).
In the Peruvian High Andes, each village has a unique style of clothing that identifies the wearer as belonging to that region. Indigenous women in the Andes dress in layers of bright, colorful traditional Andean clothing, including capes, shawls, embroidered skirts, and vibrantly colored hats

LLICLLA
Lliclla is a Quechua word for a type of cape worn by Quechua women, also known as a Manta.  A lliclla is a square woven cloth that covers the back and shoulders. It is secured at the front using a tupu (straight pin), a sturdy safety pin, or may be worn tied. When folded and pinned about the shoulders it acts as a small heavy shawl, which keeps the women warm in the chilly Andean air.

CHUMPI
A Chumpi (a Quechua term meaning belt) is traditionally worn by women to fasten their skirts. Chumpis are also worn by men as a means of supporting the lower back when carrying heavy loads, and to tie their pants. Chumpis are also used to secure swaddled infants. Many weavers make chumpis to sell at market.

JOBONA
Jobona is a Quechua word for a traditional wool jacket, worn by women, that is adorned with patterns of colorful buttons, and worn under the Lliclla.

MONTERAS
Montera is a Quechua word for a traditional hat, which varies in style depending on the region. The sanq'apa is a woven strap decorated with a heavy layer of (predominantly white) beads, that ties the hat under the chin. The number of beads generally reflects the social status of the woman.

Many women buy their hats in the market, and choose to decorate them in their own manner using sequins, flowers, safety pins, or bric-a-brac.  It is often possible to identify the village or region that the women come from by the type of hat she wears.

Sitting alone with our thoughts ..tuning out The chaos around us, sitting with our own mind, with the peacefulness & serenity of our own visions, dreams, or desires in the quietness of our own existence... sometimes this is the peace that we need.
I found this fellow while strolling the streets of Saigon enjoying this moment of solitude...And found him captivating.

Sometimes while traveling about in this world we make eye contact with another soul... for a split second there's a "meeting".... A "hey I'm on this big ball of mass called earth floating in the universe as well fellow human, Hello."
And then it vanishes.
I like these moments, Sometimes
I am Lucky enough to capture these split seconds of connection...sometimes they last an extra second like in the second photo

Woman making Yufka (Turkish Flatbread)
I was roaming around Istanbul with my camera and tripod on the 24 hours that I had free there, trying to capture as much life on the streets as I could,
I saw this woman through the window making "yufka"
she wasn't very pleased that I was filming/photographing her
But Her bread making table was set up in the window facing the street like an attraction so I thought it would be OK.
Her expression told me otherwise so I didn't stay for long but I am pleased about this slice of Turkish life I was able to capture.

Our Story

Alexx Thompson is a multimedia artist. His work has been in writing, still photography, and of late video and film. Alexx grew up in Southern California, heavily influenced by "painters and poets" since adolescence, he began expressing himself through poetry at age 17; writing socio-political humanist pieces that went on to be published in several books. By the mid 1990s, he decided to get a 'real job' and, through a friend discovered set painting and the movie industry, which, over the years, has been his fall-back whenever funds are tight...

With it's discipline and attention to detail, set painting turned out to be the perfect introduction, not only to the craft of scenic art, but the power of visual arts. It was around this time that he picked up a camera and started just shooting "anything and everything".. a natural at framing and capturing the moment, he began receiving positive feedback for his stills, especially his portraiture. It was also around this time, and notably pre-myspace, that Alexx founded the LA artist collective Central Elements, a web based community that provides a platform for artists to showcase their work. The 'Kiss-Kids' photo that Alexx used to create his Central Elements logo has become a classic in it's own rite, as it has appeared as posters and stickers in several TV shows.

An enthusiastic traveller, Alexx spent his vacation time capturing still images of locals, and landscapes on his trips though Central & South America; and began selling these through Alexx Thompson Imagery. His interest gradually led him to filming short scenes, and after directing and editing a friend's music video that, although rudimentary and shot on a basic camcorder, was well received, he was inspired to study filming and cinematography; with a dream of one day directing his own features.

In 2007 Alexx met Turkish filmmaker/actress Seda Egridere at an Indie film festival, both were at the time looking for collaborative partners and decided to combine skills and work on projects together. Their first opportunity came in 2009 with Alexx leading a two-day workshop conference in Istanbul, Turkey on the role of the Art Department in film. Alexx was then approached by The Institute of Visual Arts (I.A.V.Q), and invited to do a lecture presentation at the Ministerio De Cultura De Ecuador, where he found himself lecturing to a packed hall of aspiring young film students, in Quito Ecuador.

Seda and Alexx continued their collaboration in 2012, with Seda producing and Alexx directing a music video for the Turkish rock band, Pul; whilst in Istanbul they began developing the story-line for their current project, independent feature "The Silent Princess".
