When Director Kristen Lovell moved to the Big Apple in the 1990s and began her transition, she faced adversity and was unjustly fired from her job. In the face of limited options to survive, she, like many transgender women of color during that era, found herself in "The Stroll," a distinctive area in the Meatpacking District of lower Manhattan. Here, trans women gathered, forming a strong sisterhood to shield each other from harassment and violence. "Join us on Tuesday, August 8th, at 7 PM for this essential New York story, as Kristen reunites with her sisters to share their first-hand experiences. Join us for this month's Trans Self-Defense Class, Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at 12 noon. RSVP link is in our bio. Our Self-Defense Workshops are a basic introduction to hand-to-hand defenses and non-lethal weapons. Learn how to protect yourself and escape dangerous situations. This empowering class focuses on escape and self-protection techniques. This is the opportunity you have been looking for. For the comfort of our attendees, this is a Trans and Non-Binary only class, and we always have a crisis advocate on site should anything be triggering. Is there a minimum age requirement for the class? Yes. We HIGHLY suggest your child be at least 15 years old since the topics we discuss are mature and can include mentions of rape, date rape, domestic abuse, and more. There is always a crisis counselor on-site for support and assistance with resources. What should I bring to the class? Dress comfortably; you will be moving around. Tennis shoes or a sneaker is best. Storage area is limited, so please plan to travel light. We respectfully ask that you remove your jewelry and watches for your safety and that of your partners and instructors. We look forward to seeing you.
