Emergency Preparedness 101 08/13/2024

While everyone in a community suffers when disaster strikes, LGBTQ+ people are particularly vulnerable to displacement and other negative side effects of emergencies.
According to a recent analysis of 2022-2023 data from the U.S. Census Household Pulse Survey, disasters displaced 2.4% of LGBTQ+ people in California, compared with 1.4% of cisgender, heterosexual people.

Similarly, LGBTQ+ people in California are more likely than their cisgender, heterosexual peers to experience water insecurity (39% v. 20%), unsanitary conditions (47% v. 19%), a shortage of food (25% v. 23%), and a fear of crime (70% v. 35%) after a disaster.

Fires displace LGBTQ+ people at twice the rate (30%) than non-LGBTQ+ people (14%), and recent studies also show that LGBTQ+ people in California experience extraordinarily high levels of permanent displacement; 52% of LGBTQ+ Californians never returned to their homes after displacement compared to 17% of cisgender, heterosexual people.

This data shows the need for LGBTQ+ communities to properly prepare for emergencies and share this information.

Emergency Preparedness 101 Many existing training programs may not adequately address the specific needs, challenges, and experiences of LGBTQ+ people. By tailoring the training to be culturally relevant, Equality California Institute ensures that participants receive information that resonates with their lived experiences.

Exciting news! In our family, many of us wear several hats. That’s no exception to Unique Woman’s Coalition Board member and Treasurer and the FLUX International Director of Operations Viscount Lucas L. Rojas, he was invited to the White House for the White House Rising Leaders Summit: Shaping the Future of HIV held on July 31, 2024, in Washington, D.C.! 🇺🇸✨

The summit was to uplift the next generation of diverse leaders committed to accelerating efforts to end the HIV epidemic in our country. Our Director was invited for their work in the HIV field with TGNB youth and transmasculine individuals, highlighting the crucial work being done in the HIV field and fostering leadership within this community.

Go Viscount Lucas!!!

Royal Siblings,

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟

I am beyond thrilled to share that I had the extreme privilege of joining trendsetters and innovators Shatondra “Shay” Caldwell, Portia R. Wilson, Brianca Williams, and Sasha Jones in a feature article for the Los Angeles Times! 📰✨

The article, penned by Martine Thompson with stunning photography by Liam Woods, is titled **”Black LGBTQ+ Spacemakers on Building Community with Intention in L.A.”** Although not all of our rich conversation could make the final edit, I’m delighted that our efforts to uplift and nurture our community are being recognized in this way.

Check it out in the Entertainment & Arts section and join us in celebrating this momentous occasion! The link is in our bio.

April 18 is Trans HIV Testing Day! Don’t forget that AHF has numerous locations to get tested for free and quickly! If you have a place you like to get tested, please share in the comments below!

ALT TEXT:
Getting an HIV test is the only way to know if you have HIV.
Regular testing is the best way to know your status and prevent the spread of HIV. Testing is fast and easy. You can’t tell if you have HIV just by the way you feel because most people who get HIV don’t have any symptoms for years.

About 1 in 7 people in the U.S. who have HIV don’t know they have it. HIV testing is pretty easy and painless. Once you get it over with. It can really put your mind at ease.

And if you do have HIV, it’s best to find out right away so you can take medicines to help you stay healthy and lower your chances of spreading HIV to others.

A rapid HIV test is a fingerstick blood test that gives results in less than a minute.

They are sometimes called antibody tests because it looks for antibodies in your blood.
Antibodies are produced by your immune system when you’re exposed to HIV.

AHF offers fast and free HIV tests at our Out of the Closet Thrift Stores and AHF Wellness Centers. AHF wellness centers provide free testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV exposure.

No appointment is necessary: you can do a walk-in, so you can get tested when it’s convenient for you. The testing process is fast, friendly, and confidential.

Equality Fashion Week (EFW) 2024 is set to be a groundbreaking event, hosted by the visionary Nik Kacy. As the first LGBTQIA+ focused and inclusive fashion week, EFW is a vibrant celebration of diversity, creativity, and the spirit of inclusivity within the fashion industry. The importance of such an event cannot be overstated, as it provides a much-needed platform for LGBTQIA+ designers and brands to showcase their talents, share their stories, and gain visibility in a market that has traditionally underrepresented them.
EFW 2024 promises to be more than just a series of fashion shows; it’s a statement, a movement, and a celebration of the richness of LGBTQIA+ culture and its impact on the world of fashion.

EFW 2024 is an invitation to all who believe in the power of fashion as a force for change. It’s an opportunity to join hands, celebrate diversity, and create an environment where everyone is free to express themselves without fear of judgment. Whether you are an established brand, a rising designer, or simply a supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community, your involvement can make a significant difference. Together, we can ensure that EFW 2024 is not just an event to remember but a milestone in the journey toward a more inclusive and equal world.
Note: As an event that is predominantly managed by one person, me, as a creative and designer, I am utilizing technology to help me create graphics that are very hard to find. The goal of this event is to help support existing human creatives. You’ll have to forgive me for using AI as there aren’t enough funds to hire actual artists to create images like this to represent my vision. This is why events like this is needed. I use my artistry and utilize technology to help support my initiatives. Hopefully one day, I will not need to resort to AI for creating art. For those who are understanding, I’m grateful. My sincerest apologies as well for not catching the inaccurate color portrayal on the original image of a model. This image is intentionally meant to be filled with creative freedom as a representation of diversity.

“Royal Siblings, let us stand together in solidarity as we honor the life of Righteous Torrence “TK” Hill, also known as “Chevy”, a Black Transman whose light was tragically taken from us on Feb. 29th, 2024, in Atlanta. 🕯️ Despite limited reporting, his life mattered deeply, and we send our deepest condolences to Hill’s family and loved ones. BONDS stands firmly in support of our community, remembering his name and the significance of his existence. Let us continue to uplift his memory and advocate for justice. ✊🏽 🏳️‍⚧️”

03/09/2024

On this blessed birthday, let gratitude overflow as I celebrate 53 years of resilience as a Black Trans Woman. Despite being told what I couldn't do or who I couldn't be from a young age, I defied those limitations by staying true to myself. Today, I stand as a testament to making one's own path, following beliefs, and radiating brightness to inspire others.

As I embrace this milestone, I acknowledge the phenomenal woman I am and the journey it took to reach this point. It's a reminder to all, especially my fellow siblings, that owning our greatness is a gift we've earned. Here's to shining brightly and encouraging others to do the same.

I don’t look like the things that I’ve been through!
