⚡️Help Save Our Sign!⚡️Someone tried to steal our historic sign by breaking into the alley and trying to pry it off the wall.
There was a rumor we’re tossing our beloved sign. But rumors do NOT=truth! No clue who started this bizarre idea—but the sign is one of our greatest treasures and a huge part of Clifton’s history. It first graced the amazing Pacific Seas facade on Olive Street in 1949 and was moved to the Broadway location in 1960 when the Olive location was demolished to make way for a parking lot and the Broadway location was “modernized” with an aluminium facade.
We saved the sign to ensure its survival— and secured it carefully to the building in our alley since we could not get a permit to reattach it to the Broadway facade.
Please LET EVERYONE KNOW the sign is cherished and a protected part of our legacy! We hope to re-install it on Broadway and would be heartbroken if someone damaged it in some misguided attempt to make it their own. Please help us share the word that it’s not going anywhere!
Historic rehabilitation is a long term commitment— and sometimes it takes time and doesn’t follow the most desirable path. We wish to thank our partners in guiding Clifton’s past into our future— and want to celebrate the fact despite the odds and obstacles— we are still here! And we hope our sign stays with us!

Clifton’s salutes Labor Day with a special thank you for all the hard work of our astounding Associates! Remarkably, tens of thousands of individuals have helped craft our unique history and legacy and have been a part of the Clifton’s experiment and experience. Over nine decades later, as we work to fully re-open our doors, we are humbled by the passion, dedication, and industry of all those who have dedicated their time, energy, and efforts to keep this astonishing space alive ♥️
The sun hung low, casting a golden hue over the streets of Downtown LA as I stepped out of my dad’s dusty sedan, its tires worn from the long trek down Route 66. My heart raced; the city was a siren, luring me in with promises of glamour and glittering lives that danced like shadows on the sidewalks. Palm trees swayed lazily, their fronds whispering secrets of the rich and famous who flitted in and out of view like fleeting dreams. I could almost taste the salt of the Pacific, mingling with the scent of ambition that hung thick in the air. It was a world far removed from the quiet streets of Marcellin Missouri, where the only stars were the ones that twinkled above our little farm.
On Broadway I felt the pulse of the city beneath my feet. The neon flickered like the heartbeat of a restless lover—one I was suddenly eager to embrace. I imagined myself rubbing shoulders with the likes of Bogart and Bacall, their charm wrapping around me like a well-tailored dress. I tucked my tattered copy of The Big Sleep into my pocket. This was my new life, a stage set for the drama I knew would soon unfold…

𝔼𝕝𝕝𝕖 adored her job at Boos Bros Cafeteria’s host stand on Broadway. Guests flocked to the Beaux Arts cafeteria for the ham & eggs – and the fact that someone was always there to greet them with a warm smile. 𝔼𝕝𝕝𝕖 was that someone. Her parents met when they both worked at the Smith & Sons furniture store housed in the building before it became a cafeteria; her mother in the linen department and her father selling pianos from the third floor ballroom. She remembered the horses and carriages rushing up Broadway when she’d visit them at work as a girl. She even got her first job there selling flowers by the front door – a dollar and up for funerals and other occasions. It felt odd, but she secretly loved sending flowers for the funerals - it allowed her to imagine who the person might have been to best give them a floral farewell.
In the Broadway of 𝔼𝕝𝕝𝕖’𝕤 present, the horses had long since been replaced by cars, and the carriages by streetcars, but the energy remained. Though some of the endless optimism of the past had expired with the Depression and the smile she now offered felt a bit like an echo from a different era. But her welcoming spirit never wavered - even after hearing that the lease to the cafeteria had just been sold to a man from San Francisco to save it from bankruptcy ❤️
𝔼𝕝𝕝𝕖’𝕤 initials are still etched into our doorway, a reminder that some things never change within the Neverlands. And amazingly, to this day, she still greets the curious who venture in with that same warm smile…
Thanks LAist for sharing the news of our inaugural expeditions as we get closer to re-opening. Be sure to join the Legacy Club on our mailing list to be the first to know! ✨

Once upon a time…
Some 34,000 midnights ago…
Broadway was the West Coast’s shopping destination. It was the End of the Road—the Mother Road—Route 66, and it was where dreamers from across the nation came to experience the wonder of the City of Angels. The road itself moved away—as did the fanciful stores and hordes of bustling shoppers. But the dreams remained, tethered by more than bricks and concrete, more than economics, fashions, politics, and the march of time. They were tethered by a world of imagination housed in a building at the corner of 7th & Broadway. That corner, built besides a spring that gave life to the area, has always been special since as long as beings called this region home. This is the spot we all know as Clifton’s.
Once upon a time is once again now.
I have worked to keep the flame alive, the dream afoot, the possibilities in play—and the world in check. And now I am excited to invite the curious to rediscover what they have lost: their childhood wonder, the faces in the architecture, the ghost in the corner of your eye—the warm embrace of a long-lost love. Journey into the world of Clifton’s to discover the passion of these moments and more. Discover that you haven’t lost a thing—it’s just been waiting to be re-discovered and re-embraced!
For a special select few, the doors will open this weekend for an exclusive sneak peek of our luscious, beautiful Pacific Seas. A glimpse of its storied palms and Mahogany boat, beached high atop a dream within the realm of our collective imagination. You must join our Legacy Club to learn more—and a reservation will be required for this journey into our Republic as voyages are extremely limited. – Elle

Every venue within our Republic shakes, stirs and serves drink menus comprised of the most inventive and evocative libations from each of the many golden eras of classic cocktails 🧭 Though we’re not open just yet, we can’t wait pour you a taste of history very soon🍹
Meet Me In…The Galleon 🧜♀️If you look around during your next pause within the Galleon, you’ll discover walls crafted from the original windows of Charlie Chaplin’s pool house at Moorcrest, his first Hollywood home.
