This month Angel City Derby has been running a drive for My Friend’s Place, a local organization that assists youth experiencing homelessness to build self-sufficient lives! We will be collecting donations at our double header this Saturday 8/3!

The link to donate directly is in our bio, and below is a list of acceptable items for donation. Please stick to this list. We want to ensure that all donated items honor the dignity of the young person who will receive it. That means we need to be respectful of their needs and donate items that the org & youth have requested.

🩳New or gently used masculine & unisex clothing, belts, & shoes in good condition. My Friend’s place is in need of masculine & unisex clothing.

🩲New packages of adult underwear, especially boxer briefs

⛺New or gently used tents

🎒New or gently used backpacks

😴New sleeping bags

🛏️New blankets

💦New reusable water bottles

🎧New headphones (Android)

🧴New toiletries (full sized name brand)

🎁$10 gift cards

🥨Non-perishable food snack items. These snack items are for the youth to take with them when they leave the grounds for the day. So, think easy-to-eat/carry snacks/food (not canned goods).

Please pay close attention to whether the item you are donating needs to be “New” or can be “Gently Used.”

Thank you so much for helping us support our community!

Coming off of an exciting weekend cheering on , Bad Habit Barbie shares some of her many inspirations, and why Borderless Teams are so important!

Q: Who is a Black skater that inspires you?Barbie: I have a few! I stay inspired by Moose, Diamond, Poison, Naughty and SweetFeet. Why? They’re AMAZING jammers and they’re also super kind , humble and helpful. They’re extremely athletic, hard working and always have a kind word and advice at the ready. Watching them skate always gives me something to work on or try. Q: What do you hope/ wish for the Black derby community looking forward?
Barbie: More exposure and unity. There are so many amazing black skaters out there across all types of rule sets and it’s wonderful watching the community grow and connect. I love that there’s so many talented skaters to look up to that look like me and that little black skaters who want to do derby have so many people they can see that look like them and know that they belong in the sport and there is space for them.

Q: What does the future of Black skaters in Roller Derby look like to you?
Barbie: It looks like more of us skating and doing well and getting to a place where we don’t have to deal with micro aggressions or toning down our style or skill. It looks like a place where there’s accountability for people who drag their prejudices into their reffing. It looks like the inclusive place that it could be.
Q: Why is skating with Black Diaspora important to you?
Barbie: Because it’s bigger than me. Every time I put on my jersey, I’m skating for every black skater who’s the only one in their league or for every little black girl who deserves to see more skaters that look like her or skate like her so that they can have something to aspire to and can see what is possible. It’s a wonderful space where can connect and it really feels like a family and I love everything about it. Having younger skaters come up to us after a bout or tournament win or lose so proud of us and happy to see us skating and thriving together fills my heart up and gives me a reason to keep skating and trying and growing as an athlete.

We’re excited to announce the return of Angel of the Month! To kick it off, we have none other than Kitty Litter #440. Kitty joined the league as a new recruit in 2018. She now serves as a Captain of the Shore Shots, Head of Finance, Photography Manager, and will take you on as a blocker OR jammer on the track! Her teammates know her best as the silliest goose and 2023’s most spirited volunteer.

As if that wasn’t already impressive, Kitty is a mom to an adorable child and a few lizards, plays the bassoon, tunes pianos for a living, and can be seen skating circles around punching bags at the gym (check her Instagram if you don’t believe us).

“Kitty is so dedicated and hard working but you never see her without a smile on her face.

She is a truly caring teammate. She cares about what you think and how you are feeling and will always advocate for you.”
-Party Poison

We love you Kitty!

Q: Who is a Black skater that inspires you? Why?
Mid-Evil: Murda, Blaque Jac, and Queen; I can’t just pick one because these three inspired me the most from the start of my derby journey. From watching their amazingness on Twitch and in person. Along with their athleticism, personalities, and willingness to be there for the guidance of their own folks in a sport that at times doesn’t feel like we have a place in.

Q: What do you hope/ wish for the Black derby community looking forward?
Mid-Evil: Just feeling like we belong. A more sense of comfort and not having that feeling like we are too strong or hit too hard because another skater can’t handle our agility.

Q: What does the future of Black skaters in Roller Derby look like to you?
Mid-Evil: Doesn’t look like we are going anywhere, hopefully there will be more of us involved in other aspects of the sport for example NSO/SO to fix the well known kinks that us folks deal with.

Q: Why is skating with Black Diaspora important to you?Mid-Evil: Skating with Black Diaspora is important to me because I am not only skating with the wonderful skaters I look up to but learning the most from their past/present experiences and how they’ve dealt with similar situations. Also gives me reassurance that we are here and we’re not going anywhere!

Queen Loseyateefa shares how important the space that created has been, and talks inspiration and hope for the future…

Q: Who is a Black skater that inspires you?

Queen: Afro Dykee, Bell Right Hooks, Beyonslay, Mercy, and White Flight.Too many to name, but still too few in our sport.

Q: What do you hope/ wish for the Black derby community looking forward?

Queen: For skaters to get what they want/need from the sport in their little corners of the world.

Q: What does the future of Black skaters in Roller Derby look like to you?

Queen: I envision a future where we only play everywhere that brings us joy. If it brings us fulfillment, hold onto it. If it doesn’t, feel free to let it go.

Q: Why is skating with Black Diaspora important to you?

Queen: For many skaters, we were or still are, the sole representative on the team we currently skate or skated for. Which means we grapple with the preconceived notions others may hold about black humans in the room, which can be emotionally draining. When we assert that a space like Black Diaspora is safe, we acknowledge it’s not flawless, but we do mean it’s a place where we can authentically express ourselves without others seeking confirmation.
