“We are the wolves, the mighty mighty wolves!”

This week, we celebrated the accomplishments of the South Los Angeles Wolves, a group of young Black and Brown girls who have emerged as a dominant force to be reckoned within the Southern California soccer scene.

The Wolves, composed of 9 and 10 years olds from Districts 8, 9, 10 and 11, finished the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) season with an incredible 59-1 record, going undefeated (4-0) at the prestigious Aloha International Cup.

These 12 girls consistently showcased their competitive edge and determination to succeed at the highest level, proudly representing their City with every goal they scored.

Go Wolves! Los Angeles - the world - awaits your greatness.

More than 500 neighbors, partners, and community organizations joined me on Aug. 3 to celebrate the dedication of the South Los Angeles Greenway with a Green and Healthy Festival.

This transformative initiative promises to revitalize Slauson Avenue by introducing new green spaces, recreational areas, and cycling and walking paths for residents to enjoy.

Once completed, the Greenway will intersect a network of three NEW neighborhood parks in the 9th District: the Slauson Connect Recreation and Education Center; Sen. Bill Greene Memorial Park and Slauson & Wall Park, all in various stages of development. It will also connect to existing parks along Avalon Boulevard, including South LA Wetlands Park, South Park Recreation Center, and Gilbert Lindsay Recreation Center.

In 2021, a visionary idea took root in our City. We asked ourselves: What if the City of Los Angeles provided a guaranteed income of $1,000 in direct, no-strings-attached payments to some of our most vulnerable Angelenos? And so, BIG:LEAP was born– a pioneering poverty alleviation initiative aimed at supporting individuals with dependent children or those who were pregnant at the time and had been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guaranteed income was something I initially proposed as a $6 million investment in District 9, but quickly grew into a $38 million citywide program, ultimately benefiting over 3,200 households for a year. This morning, the City Council heard directly from the Center for Guaranteed Income Research at the University of Pennsylvania, highlighting positive trends the program had on participants’ financial well-being, food security, and sense of community, along with a reduction in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).

BIG:LEAP not only provided vital support for participants in addressing health concerns, school expenses, childcare, and emergencies but empowered them to get out of survival mode and focus on being better parents, do more recreational activities with their children, start businesses and reclaim their power.

That is why, alongside some of my Colleagues, I am advocating for a second round of guaranteed income and will be committing $1 million from my own discretionary funds to make sure this happens. My motion instructs the Community Investment for Families Department (CIFD) to report back with recommendations and program parameters for a $4 to $5 million guaranteed income program, specifically targeting individuals experiencing IPV and Transitional Age Youth (TAY).

Throughout her career, Kamala Harris has fought tooth-and-nail to gain a seat at the table, breaking racial and gender barriers along the way. Now, the opposition has resorted to labeling her a "DEI Vice President," a disparaging term that undermines the hard work and excellence required of EVERY woman of color in leadership. And we should all be so proud to call someone of her respected stature, Our President.

As we approach the November elections, which will undoubtedly shape the future of our nation, Kamala Harris stands as the candidate equipped to meet this pivotal moment. Make no mistake, America needs her to champion women's rights, protect reproductive freedoms, advocate for vulnerable children, seniors, and families, support immigrant communities under threat, and address the urgency of climate change.

However, she cannot achieve this alone. It will take collective action—knocking on doors, making calls, and participating actively—to safeguard our democracy. We extend our gratitude to President Biden for his decades of service and for guiding us through some of our darkest times. As he passes the baton to his Madam Vice President, we are inspired and better prepared than ever to forge a future filled with opportunities, enabling everyone to achieve greatness, not just a select few.

I was proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez earlier this week as we announced a proposal to extend the reach of the Fair Work Week ordinance—a cause close to my heart that provides crucial protections to workers.

Last year, tens of thousands of grocery and retail workers gained access to protections many take for granted, including advance notice of work schedules, predictability pay, mandatory rest periods, and more.

When I first introduced this ordinance, I was confident it would positively impact the lives of countless Angelenos. Now, it's time to expand it to fast food workers, who often face the most unpredictable schedules in the service sector. With nearly 75 percent of these workers experiencing last-minute changes and fluctuating paychecks, it's no wonder they report anxiety over income instability, increased likelihood of hunger, medical hardship, and housing insecurity. It doesn’t have to be this way.

By extending these basic courtesies to fast food employees, Los Angeles would show its support for the hardworking individuals who provide exceptional service to our community and keep our city running.

This is just the first step toward making this a reality, but we look forward to continuing the fight to make Los Angeles a better place for all working Angelenos.

Debbie Allen stands as a luminous example of creativity and inspiration, etching a lasting mark in the world of arts and culture. Whether as an actress, dancer, choreographer, singer, director, producer, or founder of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in 2001—where she teaches aspiring young dancers in Los Angeles—her brilliance is unquestionable.

A former member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, Debbie has garnered six Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, five NAACP Image Awards, and an Astaire Award for Best Dancer. Her achievements are nothing short of phenomenal.

For her countless contributions, including her impact on youth across the city through the art of dance, her involvement in the Civil Rights movement, and the way she seamlessly weaves themes of equality into her work, we honored her today in council, and everyday.

Last week, over 30 volunteers from the Trust for Public Land (TPL) and Equipo Verde led efforts to clean up locations within our Green Alley Network in our joint pursuit to create a safer, greener, and more sustainable community.

Our green alley projects in District 9 offer vibrant spaces where children and families can safely walk or bike to workplaces, schools, businesses, and parks. The community clean-up on Thursday focused on a pathway that connects residents to Dr. Maya Angelou Community Senior High School, South Los Angeles Wetlands Park, and South Park Recreation Center.

A big round of applause to the dedicated LA Conservation Corps team for their invaluable assistance. Uplifting our neighborhoods is a collective effort that starts with the heart of community members. Please consider joining my team for future opportunities!

This week, we celebrated the opening of a pilot Welcome Navigation Center in Council District 9. This new facility, spearheaded by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), exemplifies our commitment to innovative solutions and tangible results in our quest to end homelessness.

The 41-room, 24,000-square-foot facility introduces a new model for interim housing, designed to expedite the process of bringing our unsheltered neighbors indoors by eliminating multiple hurdles simultaneously and providing critical services under one central location. With space for up to 80 individuals, the site includes common areas, a laundry room, an outdoor patio, and a pet relief area.

The Center offers participants comprehensive support and wraparound services, aiming to transition them to permanent housing or a longer-term interim solution within just 30 days.

This weekend, we lost one of the founding fathers of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Rev. James Lawson Jr.

Ever humble and steadfast, Rev. Lawson was a giant among us. His name is synonymous with justice, compassion, and unity. Profoundly influenced by luminaries like Mahatma Gandhi, he became a pioneer of nonviolent protest in his own right, rising to become one of the foremost civil rights strategists alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As a key figure in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Rev. Lawson empowered others and fostered change through nonviolence. In his longtime role as pastor at Holman United Methodist Church, he provided comfort and hope to families in South LA. As a labor movement organizer, he led efforts to organize workers and secure a historic union contract at SoFi Stadium. His commitment never faltered. He mentored other greats, such as civil rights leader and politician John Lewis, guiding them under his wings.

For me, Rev. Lawson's voice has been a constant reminder that the fight for equality knows no bounds. As we mourn his passing, let us be inspired by his legacy to continue the vital work of building a more just and equitable society for all.

Rest in power, Rev. Lawson.

Thrilled to kick off Pride Month with my Council colleagues this morning, celebrating with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a special photo exhibit at the City Hall Bridge Gallery and a presentation in City Council honoring individuals from across Council Districts.

I had the pleasure of recognizing Ricardo Márquez, a first-generation Latino from El Salvador and proud South Central LA resident, who has led a life dedicated to breaking generational cycles and embracing authenticity. His range of accomplishments is truly remarkable, and he stands as an example of one of our finest young leaders, dreamers, and catalysts for change.

With a BA in Political Science and triple minors in Spanish, Pre-Law, and Criminal Justice from Daemen University, Ricardo is a powerhouse of knowledge and skills dedicated to justice and equity.

As a Housing Stabilizer at LA Family Housing, Ricardo helps our most vulnerable transition out of homelessness, providing life-changing supportive services every day. His commitment to the community is evident in his roles as Treasurer for the South Central Neighborhood Council and a Board Member for both the Newton Community Police Advisory Board and the Latino Coalition of Los Angeles.

Ricardo, your leadership, passion, and integrity inspire us all. Thank you for raising the bar for South LA and empowering BIPOC communities through engagement, coalition building, and policy advocacy.
