You'll often see this quote from Warsan Shire's poem "Home" posted on -- it's a powerful sentiment pulled from a beautiful piece that viscerally engages with the experiences of refugees around the world. CARE has shared the quote in the past to commemorate WRD and when speaking about Afghanistan refugees in 2021.

This year we discussed not sharing it, given the horrific news about the sinking of the fishing boat that capsized while making the journey from Libya to Italy, claiming the lives of at least 79 people. Instead, we chose to share the quote again this year, with the tragedy in the Mediterranean top of mind, because the quote is a sharp reminder of the immense and often dire challenges millions around the world face when they are forced to flee their homes. No one chooses to be a refugee, and no one makes the decision to leave their home unless they are without any other option.

Ahead of World Refugee Day we are reminded that refugees embody the triumph of hope over despair, demonstrating remarkable determination in the face of unimaginable adversity. Despite the challenges they face, refugees bring with them cultural heritage, skills, and talents that enrich the fabric of their new homes.

Today, and every day, we hope you will join us as we raise our voices and stand in solidarity with refugees worldwide.
