Hello!

I am writing to let you all know that there have been some updates to the Stake website.

Becoming Zion
https://www.churchofjesuschristalbanyny.org/becoming-zion
Last fall, our Stake Presidency announced that they had received revelation for us to prepare now and become qualified to build one of the Lord’s holy houses in the Albany area. In response to that news, a few new web pages have been added to help inspire us and help us better communicate with each other on our experiences as we move forward together in Becoming Zion. The first page, titled Becoming Zion, contains a brief overview with several photos. Each photo is a link to the different aspects of the invitations we received to qualify for a temple. Those links are additional new pages. There is a place now for you to share your experiences in this invitation. Whether it be during the evening prayer or at the temple, we want to hear from you! There is also now a place for temple visitors to report on initiatories completed.

99Plus1
https://www.churchofjesuschristalbanyny.org/99plus1
Part of Becoming Zion is demonstrating charity to each other and within our communities. We have also been asked by President Nelson, who will soon be turning 100, to “... consider prayerfully: who do you know who may be discouraged? Who might you need to reconcile with or ask for forgiveness? Has one name been on your mind lately, though you haven’t quite known why? As you bring these questions to the Lord, He will inspire you to know how you can reach out and lift one who needs help." ~ Russell M. Nelson. In response to this invitation a new web page titled “99plus1” has been created. We want to support and inspire you in this endeavor as well. Please check it out, we look forward to hearing from you online!

Yours in Christ,
Barbara Maughan

Please send in your memorial tributes and we will do our best to post their story. Below is a photo of Reverend Allan Obediah Harriman, who served as a Private, Co. F, 2nd NH Volunteer Infantry, US Civil War. Shared by Barbara Maughan.

Tools to Celebrate Your Ancestors This Memorial Day 05/27/2024

Christine Rappleye, in an article in the Church News, wrote “The first Memorial Day, on May 30, 1868… was designated as a time for “strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country. On the first Decoration Day, as it was initially called, more than 5,000 people decorated the graves of 20,000 soldiers in Arlington Cemetery, and Congressman and former Civil War General James A Garfield.

In the United States, the Memorial Day national holiday encourages people to remember ancestors and deceased loved ones. “It is breathtakingly amazing that, through family history and temple work, we can help to redeem the dead,” said Elder Dale G Renlund. Christine Rappleye continued by saying “As families gather to remember those who have died or visit with each other in other ways on Memorial Day…there are opportunities to record family stories or delve into family history.”

As said by Irene Powell in church on Sunday, “May we honor those in our families who have served their country by taking their names to the Temple”.

Please consider this invitation and if you have a family history story of a member of your family who served their country we invite you to send in a photo and a few words about who they were and any memories you may have. The Albany NY Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would love to post their story in tribute.

Tools to Celebrate Your Ancestors This Memorial Day In the United States, the Memorial Day national holiday invites people to remember ancestors and deceased loved ones. Tools provided through FamilySearch can help them locate memorials and learn about their relatives.

Gail Nurnberg Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information 05/27/2024

Gail Nurnberg, a dear Sister and long time member of Albany 1st Ward, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2024, at her son's home. Gail loved to go to the Temple and traveled many times when group trips were arranged. She will be sorely missed by those who knew her.

The funeral will June 1st at 2pm at the Greenwich NY branch 111 Academy St, Greenwich, NY 12834 followed by a potluck style meal after and if anyone would like to bring something that would be great! Amanda and Jon Nurnberg asked that we send their love to the Albany Ward and their sympathies to those who knew and loved her as much as they did.

Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, how grateful I am that we can watch, listen to, or attend general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this weekend. I know that the General Authorities and General Officers of the Church who will speak to us have prepared thoughtfully to teach us what the Lord would have them teach. I encourage you to view each session, prepared to make note of the spiritual impressions you receive.

For each of us, time marches on. As many of you know, I am closing in on my 100th birthday. Though my body reminds me every day that it is nearly a century old and to go easy on it, I honestly don’t know where the years have gone. They have simply flown by.

As senior leaders in the Church, we are called to serve for the remainder of our lives, often long beyond “retirement age.” This means that you may see some of us during general conference speak while sitting down, or pre-record our message to be shared at the appropriate time, or even require a little assistance getting to and from our seats in the conference center.

From my point of view, this is cause for celebration. I thank the Lord every day for the privilege of still being here with you. I cherish working alongside colleagues who are wearing out their lives in service to our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, despite the aches and creaks that come with advancing age. I don’t have words to express how grateful I am for strong colleagues on whom I can lean in many ways as we strive to serve the Lord.

May each of us, regardless of our individual circumstances, listen with open hearts and minds to what we hear this weekend so that the Lord can continue to direct each of us in our individual paths.

Happy general conference, my dear brothers and sisters!

Ever since I was a little girl, my Irish parents made sure I knew that there were two people directly responsible for my family’s membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Two people whose love and concern for my dad began with his baptism in Niagara Falls, Canada (where he was working at the time) and followed him as he returned home to Ireland immediately after his baptism.

The first person was President Thomas Monson, then President of the Canadian Mission, who sent a telegram to my father, George Watson, welcoming him into the Church. The second person was Bob Lynn, president of the Dublin Branch, who also received a telegram from President Monson, this one asking him to welcome George into his little branch. President Lynn and his young son, Ken, had some difficulties tracking down my father but eventually knocked on the right door and invited him to church, much to Dad’s absolute shock and surprise. He had assumed there were no Church members in Ireland! My mother, Chloë, was soon baptized as well, and they became the 16th and 17th members of the Dublin Ireland Branch.

My parents have stayed in touch with Bob Lynn and his wonderful family through the years, including son Ken and his wife and children. Dad and Mom often said that we would not be in the church today if it weren’t for the love and kindness the Lynns showed them in that tiny branch in Dublin.

In the fall of 2019, my father passed away in St George, Utah, and I visited with Ken and Rienna Lynn following the funeral. Imagine my surprise when I learned that their daughter lived 15 minutes from my home in New York! Tarra Lynn Rust (Saratoga Ward) and I definitely have a connection that goes much deeper than we ever knew, as it was her Irish father and grandfather that found my dad in Dublin all those years ago and welcomed him into the Church. They are the reason my family enjoys the blessings of the Gospel today.

It makes me smile to know that George Watson’s grandson, Craig Maughan, teaches Sunday School in Saratoga Ward to a class that includes Bob Lynn’s great-granddaughter, Juanita Rust! Who knew that the connection these men made in Ireland so many years ago would someday come full circle here in the Albany New York Stake.
