Meet Stephen, a brave little fighter with an incredible story.
Stephen was born July 2, 2021, and at two weeks old he was admitted to the Norton Childrenās Hospital neonatal intensive care unit with failure to thrive. He was quickly diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a group of inherited disorders that affect the adrenal glands, and it affects boys and girls. CAH is caused by mutations in the genes that produce the enzymes required for the adrenal glands to synthesize hormones from cholesterol.
Stephenās body does not produce cortisol or aldosterone, and it does not retain sodium. When he was admitted to Norton Childrenās Hospital, he was severely dehydrated and lethargic, and his sodium and electrolyte levels were at zero.
Today, Stephen is a happy and active 3-year-old, undergoing regular lab tests and living his best life. Stephenās mom said, āWe will always love Norton Childrenās for all the things the team did for our son. The Norton Childrenās team is so sweet and caring to patients and their parents. You made us feel at home away from home, and we will always be grateful for that.ā
