“When we began researching this project, we uncovered so many stories that needed to be told. Those featured were some of the first to treat citizens in West Louisville or they established a hospital, a medical school and practices that forged a path where none existed.” - Corenza Townsend, chief administrative officer, Norton West Louisville Hospital

“I am so grateful we left no stone unturned!” – Lori, Ebernez, Norton Cancer Institute patient and breast cancer survivor
Every breast cancer journey is unique, filled with courage, strength, and resilience. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing the powerful stories of our patients at Norton Cancer Institute. This is Lori’s story. 💞
“My name is Lori Eberenz. I am 44 years old. I have been married to my husband, Josh for 19 years, and we have two daughters, Julia (11) and Hannah (7). I lead public relations and marketing partnerships for KFC U.S. I have had mammograms annually since turning 40 and they were always clear.
In the summer of 2023, I felt what I thought was a bruise on my right breast. When it persisted for a few days, I went to see my OB/GYN and have it checked out. She didn't think it was anything of concern, but to be certain, she ordered a mammogram and ultrasound. Following those tests, nothing definitive was identified, but because I could explain where it felt differently, the doctor ordered a biopsy. I am so grateful we left no stone unturned!
I was diagnosed in August of 2023 with Stage 2 hormone-positive breast cancer. My treatment included 3 surgeries, 8 rounds of chemotherapy, and 30 rounds of radiation. I completed radiation on April 10, 2024.
From the very day I received the call that my biopsy showed I had cancer, every provider I encountered was compassionate and caring and gave me a sense of confidence. Shelby, my chemo nurse, was an angel. When I had a reaction to a medication, she stood with me and counted down the minutes to the final drop of infusion to help me make it through.
My surgeon, Dr. Stephens, was honest and direct. She quickly realized I wanted to move quickly and decisively, and she empowered me with the information I needed to do so. Dr. Hargis, my oncologist, walked me through every study that informed my treatment plan, and he wrote it down step-by-step and talked it through with me. I am a planner, and knowing each step and having it in writing and my questions answered helped to calm my anxiety and prepare me for each step.”
💖 Take a moment for yourself—regular self-exams and mammograms are key to early detection. Don’t wait, protect your health today. Schedule your mammogram here: https://bit.ly/3Al06NA

Care West of Ninth - People and places that paved the way. 🩺👩🏾⚕️
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a group healthcare pioneers in West Louisville dedicated their lives to providing medical care to people of color. As Norton Healthcare prepares to open the first new hospital west of Ninth Street in 150 years, these early medical pioneers are being honored with a special monument on the Norton Healthcare Goodwill Opportunity Campus. That monument was unveiled today.
The monument was funded by the family of Richard S. Wolf, M.D., through the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation, in memory of Dr. Wolf’s life and work as a pediatrician in our community.
