There are many reasons why every fibromyalgia patient should add exercise to improve their symptoms. My patients who move have better control of their fibro, mood, and other symptoms. My podcast has several episodes on how and why you can start moving. Start intentionally adding movement daily and gradually increase it to about 30 min per day. Please tell yourself: "Movement is medicine," "I love it," "I will listen to the parts that hurt and be curious and not afraid," "Everything that lives (well, except for plants, and I am not a plant) moves," "Movement is life!" - even if you don't believe in it, yet. Imagine yourself as the future you who exercises, does not hurt with movement, and loves it. Journal about it, but only list all the positive benefits, and don't focus on the negative. Your brain will complain, refuse, and give many reasons why you should not move - expect it, acknowledge it with kindness, appreciate it, AND DO IT ANYWAY! Watch the entire TED talk, the full link is there, not just the preview.

“NO”vember

It’s OK to say "no" to people, places & things that drain your energy or activate your nervous system.

Artificial Sweeteners in Foods Tied to Increased Depression Risk 05/11/2023

I can attest, that my patient who consume processed foods, especially who drink soft drinks or other drinks with either sugar and with artificial sweeteners, have more pain and depression. First thing I advise all my patients is to stop drinking them, there is no benefit from them, only harm and often addiction.

A diet high in ultraprocessed food (UPF), particularly artificial sweeteners, has been linked to increased depression risk, new data from the Nurses Health Study II (NHS II) suggest.

Also treating chronic pain and/or fibromyalgia often uncovers the underlying issues that are being covered by pain. Patients taught me that at times for them it maybe easier to focus on the physical pain than deal with their emotional pain. Pain can be protective although hard to accept.

Fibromyalgia is chronic pain disorder. Like depression or migraines, it does not show visible symptoms and there is no test to confirm it. It is a brain processing problem– an abnormal way the brain processes pain and other stimuli. Fibromyalgia affects about 4 million US adults, about 2% of the adult population. The cause of fibromyalgia is not known. The diagnosis is made based on symptoms. https://www.rheumcoach.com/podcast

The dysregulated nervous system is rigid and stuck in the patterns of protection and survival. It is stuck in the stories of trauma and dysregulation. The nervous system can be recruited and used in healing if we get it out of this protective mode. It is possible to move out of activated reactions that are now your habits and bring flexibility back to the nervous system and your body. In Rheum Mate membership, we just started a deep dive into how we can regulate our nervous system, applying the Polyvagal theory and rewiring our brain and autonomic nervous system out of survival mode into a mode of safety and connection. Do you push yourself too much this holiday season because you are trying to please others? Do you anticipate a crash, and it makes you even more stressed out and anxious? People-pleasing is putting the needs of others above your own. It may be a symptom of prior trauma. Remember: "No" is a complete sentence.
