We are back with yet another #MentalFilterMonday 🎙️ This week we are revisiting our episode with Dr. Ilana Levin all about why we eat and alllll the emotions that come with it. In this snippet, Dr. Levin points to how we don’t knock other ways of coping the way we do with eating as a form of coping. Our takeaway is that even though most relationships with food are complicated, it is so important to be intentional about our coping in a way that feels positive without engaging in the negative dialogue that often comes along with comfort eating. Listen along to our full episode wherever you find your podcasts! ✨

In a world where each and every person is vastly different, we certainly won’t agree on every value and belief that our client’s hold. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t be helpful and be an aid in our client’s healing.

Reggie Miller jokingly said “the Boogeyman is coming” in a recent interview. But how real is this statement actually? Sometimes, when something bad happens, we develop statements about those around us or even generalize them to the world around us when we feel we are tainted by a certain experience. In short, our own Boogeyman. We end up developing rules for life that help us to survive, but we need to face our own Boogeyman head on in order to truly move forward. #ReggieMiller #PatrickShow #NBAPlayoffs #Pacers #Knicks #Game_On #mentalhealthmatters

How can we apply batting averages in baseball to our own lives? We have to consider what’s a realistic batting average in baseball, but also, what’s a realistic batting average for our own lives. We can’t expect too much from ourselves, especially in a time of struggle, because when we do, and we don’t achieve it, we attack ourselves as if we’re a complete failure. But, if a baseball player gets up and starts the season thinking, “hey, I should be able to bat a thousand”, and have a strikeout, they may think, “oh, maybe I should quit baseball because I’m not batting a thousand”. It is about thinking what is a fair expectation for ourselves in all of the different arenas of our lives. If you enjoyed our episode, please like, comment, share, or show your mailman! It’s almost baseball season and we are in the thick of spring training! This is a time for players to gear up for the season and work on their skills to perform better once the season comes. But it’s not just about working on it when someone’s watching, sustained success comes from what goes on behind the scenes, when there’s no one in the stands and nothing on the line so when the big moments come, they can perform. When it comes to therapy, we can’t just practice our skills in the therapy office or in a moment of crisis, we have to keep working on our skills and ourselves behind the scenes, when there’s no crisis or serious dilemma.

We are all guilty of being self-critical. Maybe you’re an artist and you feel like you just can’t get a painting right, or a student writing a paper that you worked all night on and only got a C. There’s a strong belief among many of us that the only way to stay motivated is to be overly critical and this isn’t exactly true. Today, Shmuel discusses that there are other ways to stay motivated that don’t involve complacency.

If you’ve seen the news at any point since October 7, 2023, you are more than well aware of what’s been happening in Israel. Both the events happening and the response to the events worldwide can be difficult to process, but what’s even harder is being on the frontlines. This week we sat down with tour guide and army reservist, Arky Staiman, to hear about his experience working with the IDF. When Arky isn’t on the frontlines, he is helping to spread the love and connection between the Jewish people and their ancestral homeland of Israel. You can learn more about Arky via his website, israelwitharky.com, or connect with him on Instagram @israelwitharky. Today’s episode was sponsored by our very own practice, CBT Baltimore.
