FINALLY! Finally got the inside runout below 0.005”. This may not sound like a lot, but I plan on spinning this weapon ring up in the neighborhood of 3-4 thousand RPM. Balance is critical at those speeds.

I’ve been commissioned to make some bushings for another bot team. The material is UHMW. These will be parts for a heavyweight bot called Banshee of Team Small Robots.

Just had an epiphany on how to machine the ring to be round and concentric!

Originally I was thinking of clamping it to a faceplate. But that would be a lot of pieces that could fly off when spinning.

Second thought was to put it on a rotary table, but my RT is only 8” in diameter, while the ring is around 8.5” ID. I could make extension plate, and may still do that to mill the outside diameter.

But to do ID I may use an indexable boring bar. This will be a much simpler set up.

Performed the first machining function to the ring today. First time for me machining PEEK.

This is the first progress report for my new bot build. After years of competing with a wedge, I’m going to the dark side. I’m building a Beetleweight (3 lb.) ring spinner. I’ll start with doing some lathe work to make this material concentric and to reduce it’s weight somewhat.
