Summer Playground Safety Alert:
1. Check Playground Equipment:
- Always test the temperature of playground equipment before allowing children to play. If the equipment is too hot to touch, it’s too hot for children to use.
- Pay special attention to metal slides, swings, and plastic surfaces, which can heat up quickly under direct sunlight.
2. Hydration:
- Ensure children drink plenty of water before, during, and after playing. Encourage frequent water breaks to prevent dehydration.
- Avoid sugary drinks and sodas, as they can contribute to dehydration.
3. Proper Clothing:
- Dress children in lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help keep them cool.
- Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply it every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.
4. Limit Sun Exposure:
- Schedule playtime during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon.
- Look for playgrounds that offer shaded areas or bring portable shade, like an umbrella or pop-up tent.
5. Recognize Signs of Heat-Related Illness:
- Be aware of symptoms such as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps.
- If a child shows any signs of heat exhaustion, move them to a cooler place, provide water, and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
6. Supervision:
- Always supervise children while they are playing to ensure their safety.
- Be mindful of the surroundings and lookout for any hazards, including hot surfaces.
