On this day in 1980, The Clash released "Sandinista!" Their 4th studio album is a 36-song, 144-minute triple LP set, issued almost exactly one year after their breakout 2LP hit "London Calling." Sandinista! met with mixed reception, some lamenting its "excessive" playing time and dub experiments. The album has its defenders, however: It ranked top album of the year in the Village Voice critics poll; Rolling Stone ranked it 85th Best Album of the 80s, plus 323rd Greatest Album of All Time. Fun fact: the band wanted it made affordable so they agreed to take a royalty cut in exchange for a low retail price. Its singles: “The Call Up” “Police On My Back” “Hitsville U.K.” “The Magnificent Seven.” The guys were ages 24-28. More in Comments.
