I’ve never met a golfer who didn’t want to improve. On the contrary, almost every golfer I know is constantly looking for ways to lower scores, fix their swings, hit the ball farther, and correct swing characteristics.
Moreover, they spend countless time and money on swing gadgets, lessons, technology, and more, all in an effort to find the answers they need.
There’s nothing wrong with any of these approaches. In fact, I’m a fan of most of them. But they all have one thing in common: seeking answers from the outside. When we spend our time, energy, and resources seeking quick fixes and answers outside of ourselves, we may end up taking far longer to reach our goals - if we reach them at all.
What if, instead of working from the outside in, we flip the script and look at improving from the inside out?
As Debbie Ford puts it, “Remember, all the answers you need are inside of you; you only have to become quiet enough to hear them.”
When we start within, we begin to uncover an incredible amount of wisdom and guidance. As we learn how to listen to our bodies, we can work with them, not against them. When we work from the core of our being, we can make the lasting changes we’re seeking (and lower golf our scores, to boot).
Where do we start? By adopting a yoga practice. And if you need more convincing, here are three reasons why every golfer should practice yoga.

Contrary to what you might think, meditation doesn’t have to be this daunting, intimidating practice that takes hours a day. You don’t even have to sit cross-legged with your eyes closed.
It’s not about quieting your mind and removing your thoughts. I used to think this was the case. And of course, I would just end up frustrated because I could not. stop. thinking. So naturally I wasn’t good at meditation, right? Nope.
Our minds are always thinking. That’s not what we’re trying to control. What we want to focus on instead is our reaction to those thoughts - how we respond to them, what we believe about them, whether or not we attach ourselves to them.
If we’re not careful, our brains can lead us to overthink, to write stories in our heads (that usually aren’t even true), to spiral, to ruminate, to feel stuck. But when we learn how to separate ourselves from our thoughts, we remove our attachment to them. We start to understand that a thought is just a thought, and we shouldn’t let it run the show.
Beyond the mind, meditation helps us strengthen our mind-body connection, become aware of how our bodies are feeling, intentionally release tension, and breathe more effectively. All of this can be done anytime, anywhere, in just a few simple moments. And when we approach meditation from this perspective, it suddenly becomes much more accessible and a whole lot easier to try.
1. Count your breaths
2. Pick a mantra
3. Position yourself comfortably
4. Don’t worry about the time
