This is the picture I use with clients to talk about pelvic floor function (shout out ). Itβs an A-frame house. At rest, our pelvic floor should live on the first floor. When we contract our pelvic floor, we pull up and in to the attic of the A-frame. We would use this during a cough or sneeze to prevent leaking, or during a heavy lift as part of our core activation/brace. Our pelvic floor is in the basement of the A-frame when we push down and out or bear down. This occurs normally, for instance, while voiding a bowel movement. Dysfunction can occur when we are not on the level of the house we think we are i.e we are in the basement when we think we are in the attic. A pelvic floor physical therapist can help you navigate this. But the first step to pelvic floor health is understanding its function and how and when to be at each level of the A-frame.
