Fiber is undoubtably an eye-rolling topic and not the most glamorous nutrient as it goes hand in hand with discussions around digestion (aka bowel movements), but the reality is that we all want to feel good and have a healthy gut. Eating a diet rich in fiber is essential for making that a reality.
Adults should get 22-34 grams of fiber per day depending on age and s*x. Not only will this promote a regular schedule, but will also aid weight management, a healthy heart, and good bacteria growth. Here are 3 delicious sources of fiber that pack a punch.
1) Berries- one of the most popular foods, berries like raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries provide 3-4 grams of fiber per cup. With summer around the corner it's an ideal time to nosh on some berries as a snack, on a salad or in a smoothie.
2) Tropical Fruits- we often see fun tropical fruits like passion fruit, mango, and guava at the grocery store and cruiz right by them, but they are a stellar source of fiber with passion fruit providing 25 grams per cup, guava 9 grams, kiwi 5 grams and mango 3 grams per cup! From fresh slaws to salsas consider upping your intake of tropical fruits.
3) Avocados- a somewhat surprisingly rich source of fiber at 7 grams per half. Avos are also a great source of monounsaturated fat and are anti-inflammatory. We use avocados in a variety of applications at Fit Fresh but our creamy avo sauce is a fantastic option- blend together three avocados, 1/4 cup fresh lime juice, 1/3 cup water, 1 bunch each cilantro and Italian parsley, 1/3 cup olive oil, and a touch of sea salt to dress up any burger, salad, poke or taco.

As the weather starts to warm it's the perfect time to refresh your diet and reflect on what changes will make you feel more satisfied, energized and ready to tackle the day. As a mom and dietitian I put a lot of thought into what fuels our family. Whether you feed one or five, these three tips will help get you spring clean your diet.
1) Starting is the hardest part and your time is valuable. Some of the steps to reach your end goal will require time and effort like taking time to fit in your sweat sessions. Other steps you may be able to coordinate with less direct effort. That's where Fit Fresh comes in, let us do the cooking so you can focus your time where it matters most.
2) Avoid decision fatigue and stay on course by making a plan. With all my clients we set a plan and then schedule evaluation dates. Having to make too many decisions can lead to anxiety and places your mental energy outside of what's most important. Meet Maddie! She’s an intern from UW-Madison, currently completing her Master’s degree and internship, and plans to become a Registered Dietitian. She was born and raised in Madison, and graduated from UW-Madison with a Bachelor’s in Dietetics. In her free time, she loves running, reading, watching movies and baking. She loves Fall because of the pretty colors and the cool weather. Her favorite FitFresh items are the Antipasti Bowl and the Triple Berry Immunity Smoothie. Stop by and give them a try!
Meet Bridget! She’s a Dietetic Intern from Viterbo University. She grew up in Madison and completed her Bachelor’s in Dietetics at UW-Madison, and is excited to still be in the area. Meet Alex! She's a Dietetic Intern from the UW Health Dietetic Internship Program this year, and finished up her time at FitFresh at the end of September. She's had a blast working with different dietitians around the Madison area. Outside of her school work and rotations, she enjoys attending Badger games - Any and all sports!
