✨Introducing our brilliant and talented featured artist, Melana Bass✨

🌎Melana created "New Worlds" for the 2024 Racial Justice Summit. "New Worlds is an interactive, acrylic painting demonstrating the creation of new worlds and possibilities," Melana shares. "As the two women reflect each other, they are connected by their hair, symbolizing a roots connection that is familiar. Their hair is a symbol of life and shared family background. New Worlds is adorn by beautiful visions of colorful kaleidoscopes that tell a story of community impact and the ever changing cycles of family history and knowing where you come from."

🖌🎨Melana Bass is a contemporary painter and muralist born and raised on the southside of Chicago. She utilizes acrylic paint and mixed media objects to tell the magical stories of black women through portraiture. Her inspiration comes from the lens of her experience as a Black woman from a big city. It is her surroundings that drive her visual expression as she amplifies the beauty in the slang and culture of black and brown people.

🎓In 2013, Melana studied Fine Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. On that journey, it became clear that although she had a love for the arts, blacks were not historically represented in that field. As an undergrad, she began her professional career as an artist, starting a business called MB Art.

💗 Since 2016, MB Art has become a movement of her own, A campaign that uses paintings, prints and custom products that illustrate stories that the past has prohibited. Since graduating with her BFA in 2017, Melana has become even more passionate about creating and displaying Art that celebrates Melanin, Black History and Natural Hair. Her work is a testament of the historic manner in which she has fought for the positive portrayal of blacks as she continues to carry her ancestors with pride in the face of injustice. Each piece is a love letter to black people and a unique opportunity to adorn the world with the illustrious standards of black beauty.

🌈You will be able to support Melana at the BIPOC Creatives and Justice Initiative Pop-Up on our in-person day at the Monona Terrace (September 27)! She will have prints made available.

🤩Gery Paredes Vásquez is YWCA Madison’s New CEO and Summit Registration is Open! 🎉

✨After completing a national search and selection process, YWCA Madison's Board of Directors and Selection Committee has unanimously decided to name Gery Paredes Vásquez as the permanent CEO of the organization.

✨YWCA Madison’s Board President Angela Arrington and Vice President Monica Mims together stated, “Gery Paredes Vásquez has displayed a deep commitment to YWCA Madison and its mission for many years. Gery's commitment deepened over the last four months as Interim CEO in which she has brought refreshing leadership that will continue the advancement of the organization’s ideals and the communities it serves.”

Carolyn Stanford Taylor began her career in education as a teacher in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD). She became the first African American President of MTI, the teacher’s union of MMSD, and also served as principal of multiple schools, including two schools at once. Mrs. Stanford Taylor proudly served MMSD for 21 years.

In 2001 she became an Assistant Superintendent for the State of Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction, a position she held for 19 years. She was appointed State Superintendent in 2019 by Governor Tony Evers, the first African American to serve in that role. After retiring, she returned to MMSD in 2022, to serve as Deputy Superintendent. Mrs. Stanford Taylor’s leadership involves giving others the opportunities they need to lead. Upon her return to MMSD, she helped organize a Youth Summit – allowing youth leaders from across Madison’s high schools to take charge and create an environment to hear topics relevant to their concerns. Additionally, she co-created the Village Builders project at MMSD, through which diverse and trusted community members work with our students as employees.
