These small Caribbean fish, (1.25 inches in length), live in 25-65 feet of water on the reef with a white sand bottom. They have huge gorgeous colorful “bullseye” eyes! They use their pelvic fins to create a suction cup, allowing them to cling tightly to surfaces even in strong currents. Their diet mainly consists of small invertebrates and algae.
Anyone care to guess their name?

Last Thursday we decided to mix things up and dive into a different site at Devil’s Lake, because who needs routine when you can explore the wild southwest side of the lake? 🤪 🤿 😋

These small Caribbean fish, (four inches in length), have extremely elongated fins vertically, giving the most prominent appearance of a triangle have great camouflage and a roughened back, (which helps with the ID). They are found “walking” along on the bottom in sandy or grassy areas where they feed on small snails, crustaceans, as well as worms and occasionally small fishes. Their grumpy downturned mouths show wild red lips when they open wide!

WTF?? (What’s that fish?)
Please feel free to comment or add your own photos. These small Caribbean fish can react when larger predators are nearby gathering tightly together in a formation that exposes the least number of fish. Fish species found in the open ocean are especially in need of some protection, as they don't have the cracks and crevices that fish in coastal or coral reef habitats have to hide away. Instead, they hide behind one another to form a special shape which allows for the protection of the most fish.
Anyone care to guess its name?

Ken, Alayna and Janna learned to pose with the 👌🏼 and 🤙🏼 signs - a crucial part of being a diver! 😜 We’re just teasing! They crushed their pool skills this weekend with instructor Mallory and are ready to move on to their checkout dives. Way to go! 🤿

Pearl Lake near South Beloit, IL is a great place to find and photograph this week’s fish which has a long, round-body with a dark grey-brown back and sides and a light underbelly with fleshy lips located at the bottom of its head. The fish obtains its food from bottom surfaces and will eat almost anything it can, but most commonly small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. Larger predatory fish species such as walleye and bass prey on this fish. When fully grown, it can reach lengths of 12–20 inches and weigh 2–6 lb.
Anyone care to guess the name?

Pearl Lake near South Beloit, IL is a great place to find and photograph this week’s fish.
This fish is blue green in color on its back and sides with yellow-flecked scales, as well as yellow coloration on the sides and striking yellow-white outlining of the fins and tail. The gill covers and sides of head have broken bright blue stripes, causing some to mistakenly confuse them with bluegill as they reach only 7 inches in length and weigh in at about a pound. They live and feed near the bottom of the water feeding on whatever insects and smaller fish are nearby. Their relatively large mouth size allows them to consume larger food items than other fish their size.
Anyone care to guess their name?

Instructor Kim was with a great group of students recently in the pool! Several family and friends started their certification together or refreshed their skills; what better way to get more dives in than to have a built in dive buddy?! 😂🫶🏼🤿
