Another extremely important thing you need to know before designing your enclosure is: What will the environment be like? Will it be hot or cold? Will it be around corrosive agents like chemicals or salty air? The type of enclosure you will need will vary vastly with the environment.

There seems to be a never-ending list of questions to ask yourself before designing a custom electrical enclosure, but an extremely important question is:

Will you need an indoor or outdoor configuration?

One of the very first things you should know when you're in the process of designing your custom electrical enclosure is what material your enclosure will be. The most common materials are aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, and powder coated. Aluminum enclosures are generally our most popular configuration when constructing a metal cabinet although each material has advantages in different industrial applications. Free Standing and floor mount NEMA Electrical Enclosures are fully enclosed electrical cabinets, commonly on legs, designed to stand on a flat floor. The legs elevate the cabinet for access beneath. Mounting can be as easy as securing the cabinet legs to the floor, thus allowing mounting with minimal compromise to cabinet integrity.

10/24/2023

Electrical Enclosures can be fabricated to fit a variety of sizes from a small booth to a large building, the typical walk-in enclosure is a large structure equipped with one or more entry doors. These enclosures are commonly designed with an open bottom for pad mounting, but can also be equipped with full floors.

Our wall mounts are designed for attachment to a flat surface. The hardware used to mount electrical enclosures includes the use of external tabs, mounting brackets, or pre-punched holes in the cabinet’s back wall.

Bison ProFab pole mount enclosures are available with a variety of mounting bracket options for attachment to interior support poles, outdoor phone or light poles, or other cylindrical objects. Pole mounting brackets may be affixed to the enclosure’s back wall with welds or hardware.

Condensation forms on the equipment if the enclosure temperature is at or below the dew point. Over time, condensation degrades the performance of a system. The effects of condensation with current day electronic components are extremely critical due to the small displacement of pins on the components.

Open loop cooling: air is typically drawn into the enclosure at the bottom and exhausted out of the top. The input air must be filtered to reduce contamination of the enclosure by dust, salt, fog and other contaminants.
Closed loop cooling: typically done with an air conditioner or heat exchanger.

10/05/2023

Equipment placement- It is best to install equipment producing the highest heat toward the top of the enclosure, keeping other equipment and the enclosure cooler.

10/03/2023

The physical size of the enclosure is normally determined by the amount of equipment that is required to implement the application. Also, the potential for expansion is often not considered, though it generally should be, and often falls in the range of 10% and 20% of space in addition to the initial enclosure.

If your enclosure will be housing equipment that generates heat and/or needs airflow around it, you will need to add interior room to allow for circulation. Also, consider any necessary room for physical access for installing and/or maintaining equipment inside the enclosure.

Here at Bison, we manufacture a number of enclosure designs for industries. If you can name it, we have designed and built an enclosure to fit the application. In the past few years, to increase efficiency, we have upgraded all of our equipment. This wide range of capacities has allowed us to manufacture more than just enclosures. We can produce laser cut, punched, and bent weldments, brackets, parts, and assemblies.

Take a look at our Amada LCG 3015 Laser and Amada EMK turret punch press

When we build an enclosure, we implement MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) welding processes--TIG on the outside of enclosures, and MIG on the inside of enclosures.

MIG is the primary method of welding in the industrial welding process, as it is quick, efficient, versatile, and easily programmable.

Because it is more complex and takes more time, the TIG process is more difficult to master than MIG welding. However, the extra work pays off, as the welder has much more control over the strength and quality of the welds.

If you're interested in joining our welding team, please contact Terri Story at 281-356-0026 or email your resume to [email protected] for immediate consideration!

Selecting the right enclosure for an outdoor application for the first time can be a daunting task. Here are some things you should know when designing an electrical enclosure.

Enclosure size- What's the physical size needed? It's a good idea to leave interior room for expansion as well as airflow.

Equipment placement- It is best to install equipment producing the highest heat toward the top of the enclosure, keeping other equipment and the enclosure cooler.

Cooling system-
Open loop cooling: air is typically drawn into the enclosure at the bottom and exhausted out of the top. The input air must be filtered to reduce contamination of the enclosure by dust, salt, fog and other contaminants.
Closed loop cooling: typically done with an air conditioner or heat exchanger.

Controlling condensation- Condensation forms on the equipment if the enclosure temperature is at or below the dew point. Over time, condensation degrades the performance of a system. The effects of condensation with current day electronic components are extremely critical due to the small displacement of pins on the components.

Gaskets play a critical role in protecting your enclosures from harmful intrusion. Many materials are used to effectively seal enclosures to prevent intrusion, and at Bison Profab, we use RAMPF Silicone gaskets.
