Music Blocks is a Sugar Labs project and is free/libre and has had contributions from students all over the world. In 2018, they created Remake Music LLC to create curriculum materials and training services to help teaching artists to empower t

Big thanks to our MYSEP summer interns, who assisted with our five-weeks of summer workshops at MAP. These girls worked hard and learned a lot -- we couldn't have asked for a better bunch.
MAP instructor Chie Yasuda is being featured this month at The Galleryat57. Please go to the gallery this month and check out all the great things this community-oriented gallery has to offer.
And, if you purchase something of Chie's, a percentage of the sale will go to helping MAP fund our financial assistance program for local residents. Beautiful art, local businesses, and a great cause -- it's a win-win-win! 😀

Our summer workshops are over, and now we turn our focus to afterschool. If you're interested in afterschool at MAP, please don't miss you're opportunity to register! All you need is a $100 deposit to lock in your spot.
What do we do at MAP afterschool? There are sometimes exceptions, but for the most part: Mondays are music; Tuesdays are art; Wednesday are STEM; Thursdays are computer programming; and Friday is another STEM activity. The kids get plenty of time to snack, do homework, and play inside or outside every day, but they also do these activities. All of these activities are chosen because they are typically not well served during the school day, yet proven to help kids learn more and achieve. We structure everything based on this basic premise.

The kids had some pretty amazing experiences this summer!
Right now, we're in the midst of our summer workshops. But what did we do before the summer began? MAP teachers spent two full weeks creating lesson plans, which helped our teachers with their own professional development and growth as well as helping us build new, fun lessons for use throughout the year.
We also met for a half-day the week before our summer workshops began to do a hands-on training with both teachers and interns. Darryl Bullock came and led training in working with and engaging youth. Teaching artist Rafael Moreno led everyone in a Music Blocks activity, so that the teachers and interns were familiar with how the visual programming language works before the start of the summer.
And before all of this, we spent three weeks cleaning and reorganizing our space and storage, so that our space is a great learning environment for everyone.
At MAP, we put a lot of thought and effort into the learning experience. We do this because we want everyone who comes here to learn and grow.
These are real photos from our teacher and intern training day. Special thanks to for providing Mayor's Helpers interns.
We have been receiving questions about whether or not registration is open for our afterschool program this fall. Yes it is!

At MAP, we do music, art, and programming. Sometimes the art inspires the programming, sometimes the programming inspires the music, and so on.
Today, our music instructor Anabel Gil Diaz led a lesson on the music of Egypt, the theme of this week's summer workshop. This inspired this programming project, created in Music Blocks. It's challenging, yet fun, to create something new, mixing media, and learning about different cultures. We learned a lot and hope you enjoy!

This is just some of the things we did this week's MAP summer workshop: Create interactive instruments of India on the computers, design and create our own shirts, learn an Indian raga (song), play the tanpura, and play with "aperiodic monotiles". This was all part of this week's India theme.
Next week's theme is Egypt. Believe it or not, we still have openings for next week (week of July 22)!! If you'd like your kiddos to join us, have fun and experience many new and wonderful things, please register ASAP. Registration is here: https://online.mapflc.com/product/summer-workshops/ If you have any questions, please reach out.

One of our students left his lesson today with a new steel string acoustic guitar!
The guitar was given to us as a donation. It is in great condition and just needed some new strings, which instructor Devin Ulibarri helped put on after the lesson.
We're happy that we could do this for our long-time students. Keep rockin', and have a great summer!

We did this to help showcase all the great work our students have been doing, as well as a way to help students who were not able to attend the live event, either because of scheduling conflicts or because they are taking private lessons with us remotely (yes, we continue to offer private lessons online). Keep the good vibes going and consider dropping a word or two of praise into the comment box at the bottom of the page. Cheers!

Our very own students made an incredible video about their projects they made with Music Blocks visual programming language!!! Check out the video and read a bit about how the video came to be in this new article on the Music Blocks website: https://musicblocks.net/2024/05/24/new-video-students-of-mapflc-present-their-projects/ Bravo, everyone!
We've received grants from MCC to help out with various programs and projects (e.g. Music Blocks videos, drum and rhythm workshops for youth). A bigger budget means more good things from local artists and musicians. Tell your representative to support this.
Time is running out! Urge your state Senator to co-sponsor Budget Amendment #171 - filed by Senator Paul Mark - which seeks to increase Mass Cultural Council’s FY25 budget to $26.75M.
