Statement from Massachusetts Parents United regarding today's decision to issue "pandemic" diplomas.
Why are Boston Public Schools asking parents to donate money for "reopening supplies" after receiving $500 million in additional state and federal funding?
New guidance from the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education regarding school reopening for 5 days a week has just been released. The deadlines for reopening are posted below.
This guidance also also details the waiver process. Schools will be allowed to file for a waiver, but they must ACTIVELY DEMONSTRATE why a waiver should be granted.
There will be rapid response teams dispatched to help districts deal with distancing issues and HVAC issues should they be severe in nature so that they will be able to go to 5 days within a two week period under most circumstances. There will be no blanket waivers issued (I.E. We'll go back full time starting in the fall!) and waivers will only be extended beyond two weeks in extraordinary circumstances.
Hybrid will no longer be an option for districts. REMOTE LEARNING WILL CONTINUE TO BE AN OPTION FOR PARENTS WHO ARE NOT YET COMFORTABLE RETURNING TO SCHOOL.
All districts will be REQUIRED to survey parents and families asking what parents want to do and submit this with the waiver request.
Parents ABSOLUTELY MUST MOBILIZE to ensure that families are filling out these surveys to ensure their voices are heard. They will not just be taking the word of the district when it comes to what the community wants. This was intentionally built in to ensure that the voices of parents and families are heard in this process and politics is removed.
Again, parents will retain the right to keep their child in a remote option if they are not comfortable with reopening.

THE BOSTON GLOBE: Massachusetts Parents United, an advocacy group, fought for the changes by collecting dozens of students’ schedules and sending them to state officials. President Keri Rodrigues praised the regulation, but said she wishes it was more ambitious.
“It is so frustrating that at every point we are fighting to point out what should be obvious on all levels — that our kids aren’t getting close to what they deserve,” she said.
One of the group’s members, Emily Veloza in Chelsea, lauded the requirement, saying her sixth-grader would benefit.
“Four hours is better than the two she’s getting now,” she said.
But her daughter, Olivia, 12, said she wished online school included more social time with her classmates.
“They should make it funner, like having fun with schoolwork and not just be serious all the time, and have us get to know each other more,” she said. “I never get to see my friends anymore.”
Following parents’ complaints of too much independent study, state mandates expanded instructional requirements - The Boston Globe The proposal before the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education calls for students in fully remote programs to receive at least some live classes led by teachers every day; and it requires four hours of such classes per day, on average.

Massachusetts hospitals began receiving the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech on Monday after the long-awaited doses received federal approval for emergency use late last week.
“We will begin the first wave of vaccinations to front line healthcare workers, a group including doctors and nurses from our ICU and Emergency Department and patient floors that treat COVID-19 patients, but just as importantly, employees from environmental and support services, and other crucial positions that work in COVID-positive patient areas,” the statement reads.

“Comenzaremos la primera ola de vacunaciones para los trabajadores de atención médica de primera línea, un grupo que incluye médicos y enfermeras de nuestra UCI y Departamento de Emergencias y pisos de pacientes que tratan a pacientes con COVID-19, pero igualmente importante, empleados de servicios ambientales y de apoyo, y otras posiciones cruciales que funcionan en áreas de pacientes con COVID positivo ”, se lee en el comunicado.
